You have to make sure your avatar is the correct size. I use http://www.online-image-editor.com/ to resize anigifs. When our software resizes the avatar for you when uploading, it breaks the animation.

I resized it to 80x80 which is the limit for our avatars. It was 100x100 in the link you provided.
It says 100X100 in the avatar page here, which may have been his issue. That's what mine is FWIW.

Pretty sure I know how to resize an image but keep getting failure to write due to temporary file or something.
