Fun fact about Bandon; full price for 18 holes, 1/2 price for next 18 and the third 18 is free. If you go for the Quad (5am to 8pm) and make it, they pay you $100. I hear the times are booked solid months in advance.
To be young again.

Word. It does sound like our games and iron play are super similar. I really struggle to get good (or any real) compression with my longer irons. Despite taking little turf with them they still launch great and give more than enough spin to stay on greens.

Entirely cosmetic, but they look great at address too. Honestly feels like you're standing over a blade.

I might give them a shot. I hit my long irons great. I'm more confident with 3-6 than I am with 7-PW. I don't even carry any fairway woods or hybrids. Distance isn't an issue at all. Just short game and consistency.

My biggest complaint about Vice balls is that my wedges chewed them up super fast. Played a box of them and switched to the Snell MTB Black for a while which is a way better direct to consumer ball in my opinion.

Switched to the Srixon Z-Star about a year ago and haven't looked back. I love that ball.

For a similar price to Vice, I use Bridgestone e12 Contact and I love them. They're tough, long, and straight, but aren't as soft around the green. Just adjust your roll for that.

Aren't as soft *as a tour ball around the green. They stick just fine with irons.

I am currently watching Youtube videos on how to not hit hooks before an afternoon dogfight. My last 2 rounds have been brutal. I have immediately realized my grip is far too strong. Hopefully it helps. Going to try the old headcover-on-the-inside-of-the-ball drill to help with swing path as well. Being able to hit a consistent fade, particularly with irons, would make my game so much more consistent.

For folks in the Triangle and east, if you haven't played Cutter Creek I highly recommend it. Played it for the first time about 3 weeks ago after several friends had been gassing it up for a while. It's a bit of a hike since it's basically in Kinston, but it's like $60 or something and if this course was in the Triangle or the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area it would easily be a $150 round or more. Fantastic layout and fast, pure greens. 18 at Cutter has replaced MacGregor Downs as my favorite finishing hole in the area.

It's usually not too crowded either since it is so far away from everything. Fun track for sure.

Wait, you like 18 at McGregor? I really like that course but have never thought 18 was a good hole...

Yeah I know 18 at MacGregor is pretty polarizing. Well maybe not polarizing since I know more people who don't like it than do.

I think my like for it is framed by the handful of times I've played MacGregor. First time was a match play event so it was super fun because it opens it up to play hyper aggressive but there's a big risk/reward. Playing for money makes the hole interesting too.

The times I've just played normal rounds there with nothing on the line except for my score it's not the most exciting since you can just layup left and be safe the whole way. It is super fun to tee up an extra ball and try to bomb the green though.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of Wedges does everyone play?

I play vokey sm8 52 and a 56.

I played really solid golf in '21 with a set of Kirklands (52, 56, 60). I put SM8s in the bag earlier this year, but have slowly cycled back to the Kirkies.

I love being able to hit crazy shots off of rocks/etc. and not really worrying about the cost of replacement if something goes wrong.

Who's got some recommendations for favorite destinations for a long weekend golf trip with buddies? Assume people spread out over the country so at least some would have to fly no matter what. There are some obvious ones (Bandon is aspirational, Pinehurst would obviously be sweet), but doesn't necessarily need to be absolute top level courses. Bonus points for ease of travel, reasonable prices, other cool shit to do (casino).

Obviously Myrtle Beach works well for that kind of thing....My buddy just got back from a long weekend of golf in St George, UT. I believe they flew in/out of Vegas so there's a bit of driving, but you could also make Vegas part of the trip. For casino's Mesquite Nevada is about a 40 minute drive from St George.

This is my wheel house. For summer trips, Forest Dunes and Kohler and/or Erin Hills. Sand Valley is already booked up, but is amazing as well. Pinehurst has such a great vibe is and is a super great hang. Kiawah Island has some nice package deals. Arcadia Bluffs (MI) is also really good if you get one of their cottages and has some package deals. I haven't done it before, but Turning Stone (NY) looks really good and has a casino.

You could also look at Branson Missouri to play golf and shoot stuff (Ozark National and Payne's Valley). Same as Streamsong in FL (which is obviously better for a fall/winter trip). The world is your oyster.

Similar question for bachelor party that incorporates some golf as opposed to centered around it (casino would be real dope)

Casa de Campo would be a cool bachelor party spot. Domincan is relatively cheap these days compared to most travel, and casino nearby.

A friend of mine is a social member at PGA National, and has golf privileges through October. He wants me to come down and play, is this insane? Will I die of heat stroke?

Mesquite, Nevada.
One hour north of Vegas. Easy drive and affordable flights in and out. Reasonable accommodations (we rented a house for 8 guys) and great Courses including Wolf Creek a true dynamo. Also casinos, so solid there.
Total Home Run. Would go back in a sec.

Played at Mountain Air in Burnsville on Saturday. Amazing mountain course with the elevation change on shots. It just opened for the season and is incredibly lush. There's a runway for private planes at the top of the mountain that bisects the course. Just a great great property.

Played at Grove Park on Sunday morning and had a nice time of that course as well.

Geez guys. Get old, retired and very, very lucky.
As marginal of a golfer I am (14) just got the invite of a lifetime. No, not Augusta National but close.
Pine Valley, June 29th & 30th.
One fortunate SOB now hoping it won't eat my lunch too badly...lol.

Welp I'm officially in semi-rural SE Pennsylvania for the next few months, where the rough is longer, the courses are <15 minutes away, and the same old assholes feel the need to bark about their politics during an otherwise nice round of golf.

The 80 year old [redacted cable news channel] talking point machine did rip a huge fart on #4 though. All 4 of us hit the green. He should have been more gassy the rest of the day.
