P90X

mk. with the weights do you get the weights that are kind of hard to do lots of reps right now (15lbs) or the ones you can do pretty easily for more reps (10lbs) ? (don't judge my weights, i'm a slim lady)

Depends on what you are going for. He says over and over in the work outs "8-10 if you want bulk 10-15 if you want tone". I am guessing that you would want to go for the tone look so I would say go with the lighter weights.

yeah, that's how I was leaning. I don't want to be any more of a musclewoman than necessary (but I do intend to be able to do pullups, last year I could do 3 and then I practically stopped climbing)

Today's workout (#4) was Total Body strength training, which lasted a little over an hour. It was absolutely crushing, probably the hardest of any of the P90X workouts I've done. It is weight training but also involving some aspect of balance or core work into each move as well. It is not a cardio workout but I was completely drenched by the end. One move involved side-arm balance push-ups but with each hand on top of a medicine ball. It is unbelievably challenging to keep the ball from from rolling out from underneath you when all of your weight is balanced on that arm and trying to extend with the other arm. There is also a pull-up that is like a gymnastic summersalt (sp?) like a kid would do on the monkey bars - it was pretty fun.

Today's workout also marked the first Dreya Webber sighting of the new series. She is absolutely shredded.

I've generally concluded that P90X-2 is a next step beyond the original, as opposed to an alternative to the original. I don't think someone could do 2 without first doing the original, unless they were already in very good overall shape. While the warm-ups and cool-downs are longer in the new version so the workouts themselves are a bit shorter, there is much less time devoted to demonstrating technique and the focus is more on moving quickly through the moves, which are advanced enough that they would be very difficult to do without first having an understanding of the general techniques as well as the strength to complete them.

You should become one of those Beach Body Trainers because you are a good salesman. You are making me want to buy it.

I probably will after I do a triathlon...my New Years Resolution.

I'm starting up a new round of the original p90x on Jan. 2 (put on a couple of holiday pounds since Thanksgiving). At this point, I only do Ab Ripper X about half the time--unlike Tony, I just hate ARX. I have also totally stopped doing the full yoga workout and substitute in Cardio X instead--I really like that workout.

When I buy another program, I'm still trying to decide if it will be p90x2 or Insanity. One of the guys I work with had done p90x and then did Insanity and really liked it.

I did both.

They are very different...Insanity was BY FAR the hardest cardio workout I have ever done. The name really does fit. That being said I think my body responded more muscularly to P90X than Insanity but I felt like I was in better shape internally after Insanity.

So today was the much-anticipated Yoga workout. It was 67 minutes, so significantly shorter than the original. Plus, the last 20 minutes were some ab work combined with stretching around on the floor, so I think you could cut that portion if in a time crunch. For me it was more enjoyable than the original Yoga, as the transitions between moves are faster and, at least the first time through, there seemed to be a little more variety.

It also seems like Tony realized that it is difficult to see him when in some of those poses, so he does a better job verbally explaining the positions and when to transition. And one of the girls is also pretty hot with big bombs. All in all, I still don't think I'm going to enjoy this particular workout as compared to the others, but hopefully it will be more tolerable than the previous 90-minute mind-number.

Mostly Ashtanga? Or does he still do a lot of balance poses?

Roughly 20 minutes of the moving salutations (going much faster than the original), roughly 20 minutes of balance poses incorporating a few salutations here and there, and then the 20-minute ab/stretch component that contains some shoulder stands and other floor-balance moves.

BTTT, as I started Phase 2 today. It looks like Phase 2 is primarily strength training. Today was no joke, all push-ups and pull-ups with aspects of balance moves thrown in for an hour. A lot of the moves come from the 1-on-1 series, but there are a lot of them and one right after the other with only one break. I think this reinforces that P90X-2 is definitely the next step beyond the original, and not a replacement for it. Every move is like push-ups on top of 4 medicine balls or lever-style pull-ups, all of which go beyond the basic push-ups and pull-ups. I think this is also why Phase 1 is mostly balance and core work, as you need to be really strong and stable to get through these moves.

Just finished my 2nd week of Phase 1 without missing a workout and promptly threw my back out playing basketball. Now I'm sidelined for a week. Very annoying. Might just go straight to strength once I'm back.

Completely agree that it's more of a next step than a P90X replacement. Plus in the workouts Tony assumes you've done the previous workouts because he'll mention an original move and just talk about the alteration to it. I think if you started cold with X2 it'd be a fight to keep up.

Great improvement on the Yoga side, Plyocide is solid... Pretty good all around, although I feel like they could use a Kenpo replacement to give a little more variety to the cross-fit side.

Is the German porn chick in this one too?

Just bought my resistance bands today. I wanted to get weights, but I'm not dropping $300 on the adjustable ones just yet.

This will be my first time through and I am pretty excited.

Not as of yet, but there are still a few workouts that I haven't seen yet. But a couple of the other ladies could definitely make some money if they decided to go that route.

As stated above, I would definitely do the original series first before going to the second, unless you are already in very good shape.

Yeah, I'm in pretty good shape, but I'm definitely going to doing the classic first. Just wanted to post in the thread :p

Man, Amazon did some seriously work. I order my stuff yesterday with Prime and it is on my porch already waiting for me when I get home.

I love Amazon Prime. Hopefully everyone knows about the fact that it's free for all students. You pretty much just need a .edu email address.

DCDeac, what was your weight when you began/ended P90x. Were you doing it mainly to get toned up, or lose weight?
