Best Airline Rewards Credit Cards

palma I looked at the Barclays card. Nice card. $89 annual fee is annoying but there are some nice perks there (mainly the 40k bonus miles at signup) and it's nice that you are not locked down to one airline or hotel chain. Unlike the CSP there are decent enough perks after the massive signup bonus that make it worthwhile to hold onto. The 7% dividend is OK for CSP but they need to do better than that to justify the $95 fee. The dividend doesn't take into account the signup bonus either which sucks. Has anyone had success downgrading it to the no-fee version without affecting credit score via closed account?

This may have been covered, but whats the best route for a recent college graduate with no CC history? I've used a debit card forever they bumped me off my "college" rate when I turned 24 last week. Thanks

Secured credit card, co-signed card, retail card. Get a couple if you can. Pay off fully every month.

I started with a co-signed card FWIW. Good luck, in no time you'll be playing the credit card deal game w/ the rest of us.

Do you have any history like a car payment your parents made in your name? Whats the credit score like? The market is pretty bubbly again, you may not have to do the prepaid cards, etc. And what sorta rate are you talking about with a debit card?

Anyone ever received the 100,000 point targeted AMEX Plat offer? I am really considering redeeming it. Those points are worth at least $1000 in travel rewards. I already have a blue cash back card with them.

This is why I love teh Chase Sapphire Preferred:

-Got a text this morning that my card was declined at a gas station in TN.
-Verified the decline was correct, as I did not make this attempted purchase.
-Called the number on the back of my card (and as I was making this call, they actually called and left me a message).
-A real person picked up the phone, and the situation was verified and resolved in under 10 minutes.
-They're over-nighting new cards to me.

Boom. Love that. Still doesn't explain how someone got my card number and that alone is disconcerting, but I do definitely trust the fraud-catchers w/ the CSP to keep an eye out for stuff.

Nowadays when boyfriends post homemade videos to amateur porn sites generally they have to provide a valid ID and credit card for all participants

Chase is actually middle of the road for problem resolution and fraud situations. That said, the use of 2-way SMS to alert customers of potential fraud has been a significant improvement for credit card companies, creating a better customer experience while decreasing operations costs. I recently led a geolocation project where for customers upon opting in, we would use geolocation through their cell phones to verify whether or not they were making a purchase. Lot of cool things happening in this space.

Next year though, all credit cards will start having a chip inside them similar to what's already happened in Europe. This should greatly cut down on point-of-sale fraud.

does anyone link their cards to dining programs? Am I reading this right that its like a free 5% points?

http://thepointsguy.com/2014/05/increased-signup-bonuses-for-dining-rewards-programs/

I've had my cards linked to SkyMiles dining for at least a few years. I certainly don't plan my meals around places where you get miles, but there are enough places I would go regardless that I hit the 12 dines per year and get 5 miles per dollar spent. Nice little bonus for having to do absolutely nothing other than eat at a restaurant I was going to eat at anyway. Sometimes I'll go somewhere and then get a nice surprise email that it was SkyMiles dining restaurant. I don't see any reason not to link to a dining rewards program.

Yeah, I had a fraud situation with my CSP and they nuked it quickly, and painlessly. I am very pleased with their service so far.

I do agree with Nonny, though, even though Chase has been great for me, nothing scares the bag of of someone like saying "I'll just dispute the charge, and let Amex sort it out."

Amex and the CSP are perfect compliments for those looking to pair up cards. Gas & grocery for one, dining and travel for the other.

I've had fraud a couple of times with a Chase Southwest card and I had to point it out to them without them alerting me. Once was for a 7/11 in CA for like $12. The other was for charges in Wilmington, NC at McDonald's, Food Lion, and like Walgreen's totaling about $120. For that one they were like "well, were you in NC?" thing is, I was. I spent the night in Asheville driving from FL to DC. It took me explaining to a couple of people on the phone how I was not simultaneously on the eastern and western ends of the state on the same day.

Capital One Venture FTW. No stupid rules, points never expire. I have cashed in on lots of free flights over the years. Their customer service used to suck but over the last year or two they have improved it dramatically. You talk to a native English speaker in the US, not Bangalore, and cashing in points is very easy.

I wonder if its the difference between the sapphire preferred vs. another card. i'm pretty sure one of the 'perks' of the CSP is pretty frequent/good security checks, and i think the live person/direct number is unique to that card as well.

well, due to terrible timing etc, US Airways' site ended up being the only place to get the flight i needed. It wasn't available on the Chase site.
Impulse signed up for the US Airways World Premier MasterCard, for 40,000 miles which will just about pay for the flight. No minimum purchase amounts needed or anything, just automatic 40,000 miles with first purchase (which counts as the ticket, in this case). Plus a $50 credit for signing up for this.

...I feel like I just cheated. What bad can come from this? I essentially got a $600 flight for $50 because I said "yes." Can I not just cancel the card once it's paid off and go on my merry way?

slight decrease from closed account but should be temporary, if it has no annual fee I'd just keep it and store it away
