The Departed was 'loosely' based on Whitey. And that only happened in rewrites after Nicholson asked Scorcese to add a flair of realism to the script. The Departed was originally intended to be a remake of the Chinese flick, Infernal Affairs. Black Mass is supposedly the 'true story' of Whitey.
 
Depp has been gettin dem checks for 15 years or so. When was the last time he took a role outside of his comfort zone? His Hunter S. Thompson was a degree away from his Willy Wonka, which was an arms reach from his Jack Sparrow; His maniacal, yet charismatic drunk character is tired. Rango and Public Enemies were decent, but his last truly great performance was probably Gilbert Grape.
