My grandfather served on a destroyer in World War II. He set the depths on the depth charges and also served as a gunners mate. In 1945, his ship was assigned to carry the underwater demolition teams that were supposed to blow up the beach obstacles for the invasion of Japan.

my grandfather served on a Destroyer Escort ! his ship sunk a japanese sub with hedgehogs and shot down a kamakazi.

i mentioned this story before but when the destroyers did things like sink subs or pick up downed airmen, they got a reward of ice cream from the carrier(s) (who had the good food, of course)

when his ship shot down the kamikaze, the carrier guys intentionally dipped their ice cream into the sea while sending it over to the ship. my grandfather used to bitch about those carrier men more than the japanese

That's cool.

My grandfather's ship was an APD (Auxiliary Personnel Destroyer). The captain came up to him on the ship's shakedown cruise and ordered him to set the depth charges at 150, 100 and finally 50 ft. The Captain told him to roll the charges immediately upon hearing the call for general quarters without telling anyone to see how the crew would react to live fire combat. The 50 ft charge lifted the rear end of the ship out of the war and slammed it back down. He had lots of stories about shark fishing from the ship Guantanamo Bay, swimming in the Panama Canal, serving in the Phillipines, China and finally Japan.

My great uncle was on a DD (the USS Bush) and fought at Leyte Gulf. His ship was sunk while on radar picket duty at Okinawa by 3 Kamikazes. He was in the water 12 hours before being rescued.

They both talked about the ice cream as well.

My other grandfather was in the military police and was on deck when his transport ship came under Japanese submarine attack as they were heading into New Guinea. He said he saw the torpedoes streaking toward them but luckily the ship turned in time and they missed. The Japanese Sub had depth charges dropped on it by the navy variant of a B-24.

Remember movies? I'm talking major tentpole releases at theaters.

Looking forward to it.

The theater closest to me is a reserved seating venue. I'm guessing they'll reopen with some kind of masking requirement + capacity limit and I'm 100% for it. I'd pay $30 to see a big-ass movie in a half-full theater.

Really need these guys to get their shit together and save the world.
