Appy State job open, let's get the Lobo to App State campaign going!!!!

I don't think Moore "agreed"

What I read said Cobb wanted to move him to another position in the department last year and Moore refused. Cobb "met in the middle" and let Moore have a swan song season. Nothing in there says it was Moore's will.

And the Grobe/Moore comparison is very different. Yes, both built programs from the ground up, but Moore stayed loyal despite many higher offers for 24 years. Grobe will probably do the same if allowed, but he's 15 years behind on the timeline.

I'm not sure i'm familiar with any of these offers that Coach Moore turned down, can you elaborate on those?

I would guess the discussions that Cobb and Moore had last winter had something to do with the dismissal of his son Chris Moore from the coaching staff. Chris had been an assistant for 7 or 8 years. Jerry had been giving him raises/promotions (undeserved) for years and passing over other coaches who were more qualified. Chris also had many off the field issues, drugs, DUI's, rumored affair with student trainer. He was finally relieved of his duties by Cobb because Jerry wouldn't do it. But i'm just speculating on whether the talks of Jerry's last season had something to do with his son and how he handled it.

Moore is such a classy guy he would never let the public know if he was being courted by a D1A program but I know for a fact that he was approached by at least 2 schools when I was at App (95-99). The discussions never went past initial contact because Moore (more importantly Moore's wife) did not want to leave Boone.

edit: I think you are probably right about his son but that "issue" was resolved. He was fired last year. Why fire Moore now? Again, in my opinion the man earned the right to leave on his own terms. Especially considering the program is not in decline.

I'd be shocked if he wasn't courted by more than a few 1A programs, his stock was pretty high for several years.

I don't care if he was drooling on himself, that man deserved to go out on hi own terms. Total classless move by the AD (if he was forced out).

That being said, Scott Satterfield (acting coach) is 10 times the coach Lobo is in his best dream.

I thought Satterfield was the heir apparent. Is it possible Cobb and App risked losing Satterfield if Moore stayed around another year? Doesn't sound like Satterfield (Aaron Rodgers) is too pissed that Moore (Favre) is gone. “I knew that whenever coach’s tenure was over I’d be in a good position to carry over what he’s accomplished over the last 24 years. I’m taking over right now as if I’m running the ship.”

I have an awful feeling it is all about moving up to FBS. Moore (rightly so) was not on board with moving up

Makes sense Moore wouldn't be on board with it given his record at his last FBS job. He was 16-37-2 in 5 years as head coach at Texas Tech and his best record there was 4-7. Don't think TT has lost more than 7 games in a season since Moore left 25+ years ago.

That doesn't matter. If he was courted by a D1 program of any importance, people would have heard about it. He and his wife probably loved Boone so much because it wasn't the pressure cooker of Texas and major conference football. Can't see a huge job offer heading his way (at least not on par with Texas Tech) until after he won his 1st national championship at age 66.

How often has there truly been a smooth transition when a legend at a school steps down? It rarely happens.
App won at least 10 games and made the quarters from 2005-2010. In 2011 and 2012, they only won 8 games and got knocked out at home in their 1st playoff game. Small slip, but is that because recruiting top talent has tailed off as high school recruits decide they don't want to commit 4 years to a coach in his mid-70s whose best days may be behind him?
Hope Satterfield or whoever the replacement is can do a good job and keep ASU football at the top of the SoCon.

Nonsense. We will have as much talent next year as we have had since the title teams. We started a Fr WR (Price) who will be a first or 2nd round pick.

So why the drop off the last 2 years in record?

Calling this a firing isn't accurate.

Several times this season and last I would catch the App football show on one of the Fox sports channels and at times when they'd be interviewing Moore, I'd think he acted a little off and I even wondered if maybe Alzheimer's or Dementia might be sitting in. Seriously, I'm not being funny. I hope not of course, I've got tons of respect for Jerry Moore.

He has definitely been deteriorating over the last few years mentally. I have no idea if it is dementia or not, but he is getting older.

So why the drop off the last 2 years in record?

We had two years where we won 8 games....a lot of schools would kill for a "drop off" like that. We lost a lot of NFL caliber players and were reloading and like I said we will be as talented next year as we have been in many years because of that reloading. You can't win 11 games every year.

Skins, if Moore agreed at the end of 2011 to only coach one more year, and this weekend said he wanted to coach in 2013, are you OK with that?

I know you said in your first sentence on the thread, "I don't care if he was drooling on himself, that man deserved to go out on hi own terms." , but am curious if you really believe that.

If Satterfield becomes the coach, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the plan over the past year and Moore changed his mind because he had 10 starters coming back on offense and wanted to go out on a higher note. If they go with someone else, I would say they wanted to force out Moore.

“I knew that whenever coach’s tenure was over I’d be in a good position to carry over what he’s accomplished over the last 24 years. I’m taking over right now as if I’m running the ship.” --Scott Satterfield That sounds that like someone who had been promised the job last year when Moore said he was only going to coach one more year.

He wanted to coach another year and the AD would not allow him to do so. It surly wasn't a retirement.

He agreed to retire following this season and changed his mind and the AD said he couldn't. That isn't being fired.

This whole thing was structured to allow Moore to go out on top and allow ASU to move on while they were still on top and to avoid an FSU or PSU situation.

That's what I'm saying. Every report I've seen has said that HE agreed that this would be his last year. You can take that back.

Yes, I would have been fine with it. Moore's retirement announcement should be attended by Moore, period point blank. We only have Cobb's word to go on that they had some sort of agreement and even by Cobb's own words it sounds like Moore never agreed. JM earned the right to handle his retirement any way he wanted to. The rest is pure speculation.

All that being said App will be very good next year under Satterfield.

I can 100% guarantee you there was at least an understanding that this would be his last year.

Again, I have not seen where Cobb said that HE agreed to retire. It sounds like they came out of that meeting last year with a difference of opinion on the matter. This is all a one sided story because we have not heard from Moore because...again, he did not attended his "retirement" denouncement.

I can 100% guarantee you there was at least an understanding that this would be his last year.

That doesn't mean that Moore was on board with that decision.

We can agree to disagree, but the things that I know about the situation have me:

1) Knowing he wasn't blindsided and there was a long term understanding/agreement that this would be the last year
2) Believing this is a good move for the long term health of the program

I don't really think we need to agree to disagree because I am not sure I disagree...especially if you take out the word agreement. I don't know anything about the situation other than what has been in the paper (and it sounds like you might). But I could very easily see it as Moore knowing that Cobb had told him this would be his last year and he decided not to play along.

I do agree this will probably be good for the long term health of the program as long as we did not do this so we could move up to some BS FBS conference. If, in fact that is what this is about it will be the death of the ASU football program as it now exists.
