To Tip or Not to Tip?

I tip the ladies after a haircut, only because I was raised seeing my parents do it, but I am not sure I buy the fact that we all should. I mean you do not tip your insurance person when they do a great job finding you a new policy. Instead they earn your trust in looking out for you and you come back the next time around.

What is the board's view on tipping when you call in take out and pick it up at the location?

srsly? I'm pretty sure we already had this discussion a few weeks ago. I think the general consensus is that you should tip at least a couple of bucks because of the effort that went into packaging your food up and preparing it for you to pick up. I could be wrong though.

I tip the girl who cuts my hair well because I want her to go out of her way to make sure she gets it right or fits me in if I need an appointment on short notice. If I went to Super Cuts or something I probably wouldn't care as much.

Travel Often, and Tip when I am served. Personally, I like bringing my own luggage up to my room at a hotel, So I don't tip the concierge then. I also look up restaurants myself.

With a 1.5 month stay at hotels occasionally, I like to tip during the first week. I tip 5$ a day for 7 days. The hotel cleaning staff alternates, sometimes 3 different people will clean your room in 1 week. 90% of the time after doing this, My room is really taken care of. half the time, after that Week, I'll come back to a basket of goodies and a couple beers from the service manager thanking me for my tips toward theirs efforts.

What about places where you order at the counter, pay, and pickup at the counter? Like Rose's Deli.

Doesn't matter. If they put a tip line on the receipt at Harris Teeter would you start tipping?

I'm not going to tip for the basics (basic transportation on shuttle, basic food prep for carry-out), but if the workers puts forth an extra effort (unloads bags from parking shuttle, comes to my car with food) then I will tip. I need to do a better job tipping hotel staff.

yeah I don't think I've ever done pickup food at a restaurant but I wouldn't feel obliged to tip

I got a new mattress delivered a couple weeks ago and realized right before the delivery that I had no cash. whoops, sorry guys.

But the topic of tipping comes up all the time here and makes me feel cheap. I tip waiters and bartenders pretty well but I kind of don't see why I should tip other people who are being paid normal wages just for doing their job correctly. If a haircut or whatever needs to cost $50 instead of $40 to cover costs, then just charge $50 instead of having an article tell me I'm stiffing someone for not tipping enough to make up the balance. Now that I'm researching a wee bit, are bartenders actually paid below minimum wage like waiters? (Not going to stop tipping the bartenders though don't worry.)

a 50 dollar haircut? ugh

:noidea: I think many women pay that regularly. probably some color or something involved.

I get mine cut like every 2 years and have sprung for expensive $40ish ones the past few years, and did tip, but before that I just looked for the Great Clips or Super Cuts $7 sale or whatever.
