Here's a look at Athletic Department financials for the ACC schools between 2011 and 2012. Wake is at the bottom in terms of revenue (despite being 4th in attendance  ). But we're 3rd in terms of profit generated:
Total Profit
1. Virginia - $6,839,869
2. Virginia Tech - $3,752,954
3. Wake Forest - $3,586,168
4. N.C. State - $1,370,235

07 is right about Marquette having fewer athletes to pay for, basically because they don't have football. Then again, they don't receive the tv revenue generated by being in a BCS conference.

Keep in mind, Wake had to pay Dino for 3 years (I think that came to about $2 million total), pay Grobe's buyout, pay Bz's buyout (no one knows how much that will be), and Wellman got a big payday not too long ago.
The $3.24 million reported for Vanderbilt's David Williams and the $2.44 million for Wake Forest's Ron Wellman were driven heavily by payouts of deferred compensation amounts that had been accumulating for more than a decade, according to the returns and other information provided in response to requests from USA TODAY Sports.

But even including only one year's worth of the annual average portions of the deferred money, the returns indicate that Williams - who holds multiple positions at the university - and Wellman are among the nation's highest-paid AD's.

By the way, Marquette has slightly more women participants than Wake, 192 to 177. Football is the primary difference.

Hard to believe we could pay someone like Bz $1.4 million per year but can't afford $2.5 - $3 million for an elite coach.

Does football pay for itself?

If so, the only reason Marquette could pay more is Doc Rivers.

I just know townie is watching, disapprovingly shaking his head as he reads a lot of these threads.
