Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

We could have paid a coach 5 million if we could convert the loss of productivity from Wake grads during this search to dollars for a coach. You guys get back to work before you get fired. We will get a good coach. There is no best coach in this country. There are plenty of good ones. We are going to get a good coach, because this time Wellman has the smart people engaged in the search. Just having a coach who can talk to us is light years ahead of he that shall not be named. Take Skip Prosser. Dude could always make you grin no matter what happened on the court. He was just damn fun. The last guy could have made the elite 8 and I would not have wanted to share even a cab with him.
 
Here's a scoop: Nobody knows anything. Anything we may have heard was also almost certainly conjecture by someone who might just be in a better position to make guesses.

We could hire the most random coach in the nation in five minutes and nobody here, or anywhere associated with Wake, would or should be surprised.

There is no way that she is asking for a professorship, and that is what killed it. It is damn hard to get a professorship at any decent school, much less a T25 school, and especially without a PhD or other serious professional accomplishments in the field (See: Wayne King: Pulitzer Prize Recipient, 2 additional Pulitzer nominations, New York Times). She doesn't strike me as someone who would want to come in and want special treatment. That article in Essence WAS the fucking bomb, tho.

Somewhat related: I didn't want to go out on Saturday night because I knew I'd be worthless yesterday because of it. Did I say that and incur a bunch of shit from my bros? Of course not. I blamed my wife because they are scared of her temper.

So even if it was Maya who said "No" (big if), it wasn't really Maya saying no.

Other than hiring Claws, is there something specific that you can point to in our Athletic Department's recent past that is not misguided? I may be wrong - but it just doesn't seem like the AD is worried about unifying the fan base.

Paging smallsamplesizedeac... but when I was in grad school (not WFU but another SE "elite" school) back in the 90s, the Physics Department did just that by creating an adjunct position for the husband of a big-time researcher the school was coveting. Signed her up on tenure-track and threw in the position for the husband to seal the deal. The same thing happened mid-2000s with my sister - a university wanted her, so agreed to take her husband (in a different department) and carved out a position for him. I can't speak to the qualifications of the spouses who got the "gift" professorships, but it happens.

FWIW as a creative writing minor from good ole Wake they had their other "big name " writer (besides Maya) in residence leave last year (McNally). If I were to consider a professorship type gig it would most certainly have to be delayed a year or two so there's no perception of "giving" a job away.

Sadly the schools' enrollments have inversely mirrored contraction in the industry. They've become factories to prepare people for jobs that don't exist anymore. Places like Medill and CSJ are great institutions that will educate you quite well, but they're not that difficult to get into, and they don't really carry much weight or prestige in the industry because most media companies are run by people who look down on master's in journalism. This doesn't hold for every single case for every single J-School grad, but that's the general understanding even of the top master's programs.

Furthermore, I can name 15-20 personal friends with Medill degrees. I've taught students who have gone on to Medill and CSJ. I've worked with them as colleagues and been their supervisors at work.

Bottom line: Medill is a cool place where you'll get a great education and possibly get your foot in the door or broaden your career prospects. But it's not that prestigious in the industry, and you've got a better chance of becoming a "writer-at-large" than anything else.
