Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Yes he is but he is WAY LOW on the totem poll. I just talked to him. He got his info from a call where there were several coaches on the line (some big names as well). One of the guys said that he had heard that Manning was going to turn us down but has not yet. He said the guy (not sure who it was) was fairly confident of that fact. They all agreed that our job, because of administration, academic standards and dysfunction is not an attractive job. The doubling down on Smart was more speculation than anything but they knew that Smart was close to taking the job so it only seems logical.

That's all I got.

THE JOB IS TERRIBLE AND THE SHITTIEST OPENING, BUT THE BEST UP-AND-COMER WOULD GO IF THEY DOUBLE DOWN

Wellman made his bed in 2010. Now, the players and fans are forced to sleep in it. If he screws this up, he needs to go immediately. Let Buddie run the department and let Battle coach in the interim. Honestly, if Wellman blows this hire, wake us up for the next coach in however many years.

I don't know what Tulsa's qualifications are. Our Juco policy is a good one. We take academic exceptions and that is fact. And all the culture talk has never changed that fact.

Perhaps I misunderstood where you were going with that, but seems like quite a long time since we've had a JUCO that I can remember. Are you saying your okay with our unstated policies?

who decided on the standards? bc maybe we shouldn't be angry with RW

No kidding. As if we would bring Danny Manning to campus and offer him the job if we thought Smart might still accept.

This reminds me of when people had sources that knew intimate details of Shaka's thinking process.

I doubt Manning had already made up his mind and told his coaching buddies that he was going to turn down this job before flying all the way over here.

Good point. But given Manning's handling of all this I would not be shocked if he went to Winston for the main reason of getting more money out of Tulsa. That is surly what it seems like if you read his comments.

He met with Wellman in Indy. He met with TU afterwards after Wake had already basically offered. Then he told a bunch of blabbermouth coaches he was going to turn us down. Then he flew to Winston-Salem because he wants to meet with TU again and be like "yo, I visited, it was pretty nice, give me 700,000 instead of 600,000"

Yeah all makes me really question Manning. It just does not seem like he wants to really coach at Wake. Maybe I am just being ignorant to the realities of our coaching situation and wearing black & gold tinted glasses...

Why would Wake ever state their admission policies in regard to exceptions. That would not be productive. Our admission position on Juco is well documented publically. You must qualify out of high school to be considered. And to Wake's credit we do not participate in the parking of athletes at The Juco level.

I want to state this again. My info IS NOT first hand. Let's not go throwing Manning under the bus just yet. It could turn out that my info is total bullshit...coaches like to talk and seem like they know more than they do.

I hate my mixed feelings right now. Is that flight coming in from Richmond that es in under an hour in anyway associated with Wake? The plane that is.

Aside from that, he is clearly playing both sides very publicly, which I do not care for.

The suggestion that, should Manning decline this opportunity, we should just let Battle coach for a year would depend on Battle's willingness to do so. Why would he do that unless Wake gave him a multi-year deal. IMHO, he needs to get the heck out of Dodge.

Shaka liked Wake but Maya wasn't really down with all the brownstone architecture and Shaka thought the Joel was just aight. He really liked the quad and Cavanaugh's potential but wasn't sold on our PG position. He was worried about not having enough schollies and wasn't sure if he could deal with the Winston humidity. Also, not enough solid Thai spots. He told this to all his closest friends and ex-players on a conference call. #sources
