Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

He. Is. A. Stud.

No chance he is playing at Sienna come September. Too good.

Missed all but 10-15 minutes of the game because of an emergency at work. Nearly killed someone in rage, but whatever.

I will say this tournament has been helpful despite losing to Mexico.

What we've learned:

-Lichaj is promising on the left.
-Our CB's are lacking. Tough to tell how much of that is not knowing each other all that well. Boca is decent, but he's only got a couple years left.
-Dolo is far more important that anyone gives him credit for. But he's also only got a couple years left in him at this level.
-Bedoya and Adu should be included for the next 8 years.
-Bradley is our future captain.
-Jones is bipolar. He makes some great plays, especially cross field passing, but then will make a foolish turnover/tackle. I think we're playing a bit faster than he's suited for.
-Dempsey/Donovan can be great when we find them. Unfortunately, they both can disappear for long stretches with the way we play.
-Jozy is good. He might not be playing club matches as often as we'd like, but he plays solid for the Nats. I think he's growing a lot more as a player than most admit.
-Agudelo has a future, but he's not there yet.
-Bornstein continues to suck, completely.
-Ream isn't ready. In fairness, not a lot of CB's are at his age. He needs to learn to anticipate and position better, but these things come with experience.
-Sascha is serviceable as a ACM. Fortunately, there's 3 or 4 guys who are better at that spot. He's awful on the wings.
-Howard is solid. He had no chance on the two goals I saw tonight. He made a number of outstanding saves this tournament, without which, we wouldn't have been in the finals.
-Bob Bradley is done. Made some good choices this tournament and some more headscratchers. Adu doesn't make the roster for the group stage then gets brought in for the semis? Ream/Wondo go from starting to left out to bench? No chance given to Edu in the group stage? I'm happy to see he went to a 4-5-1 and his selections were better than in the past, but it's time for a change. He's done well in his time.

Stock going up -

- Dempsey - Leader now.

- Adu - A very pleasant surprise. He was more than solid. He's 22 now. Time to put up or shut up has arrived.

- Bradley - Heart.

- Agudelo - Young and promising. Raw.

- Bedoya - Needs to be more consistent, but a definite plus this tourney.

Stock going down -

- Our entire defense save Cherundolo, and he ain't young. Ouch.

Stock neutral -

- Donovan and Jones. Mercurial leaps to mind.

Watched the U17 team for the first time tonight and was blown away by Guido. Was pretty much a man amongst boys for much of the night. Will be interesting to watch him develop. Anyone know what his club status is?

I wish a U.S. player would have knocked the shit out of Barrera. Not because he killed us, because he was awesome, but because he's a pussy and a complete d-bag. Goodson should have pounded his ass when Barrera karate chopped his arms to get the ball out of his hands after a goal.

Barrera is quality. You wish he was American. Stop being jealous.

I'm so fucking sick of people being like, "oh he is a bitch!11!!" When all they really mean is, "oh, I wish he played for my team!"
Pathetic.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'd give Hope Solo my lightsaber IYKWIM

Thought the same...excited to watch this kid grow.

On another note it was awful watching New Zealand not cross over midfield for the last 10 minutes of the game playing for the draw against a 10 man US squad.

Eh, it was definitely a douche move when he mauled Goodson for the ball. I'd say that about an American player if they did it too.

Aztecs Premier out of San Diego. Doesn't seem to be one of the bigger clubs in SoCal even

He is quality, as I said. He is indeed awesome. He's also a huge douche. You should understand what that's like, dv7.

BTW, I get fucking sick of people who read too much into something and fail to read the message in its entirety. I said he's a great player, and he is. He's also a cock sucker with a bad attitude. I'd hate that shit were he American or Mexican. Feel free to like players regardless of attitude. I prefer great players to also be quality people. FACHT.

seriously don't see how you could come away being impressed with Bradley. I know you can't say anything bad about the guy here, but he's average. That's all. Average.

baby bradley that is

That's why he's not playing for club and that's why his old club shipped his ass out for free when fighting a relegation battle

I really couldn't care less that he tries hard. That should be a given. That's not captain material.

VA, thanks for the tip about Home Team in the Fan in Richmond. Enjoyed our time there, regardless of the result. Melissa (manager) was awesome and loves soccer. She's a former coach and soccer mom. Couldn't have been any nicer.

Thanks again for the advice.

Who should be captain?

Really? You wouldn't want your hardest working player to be captain? There's no one on the field who gives more effort than him. Even if you think he's average, I doubt you'd argue that.

Howard is a good choice as well, but I prefer field players to have it. They're given a lot more freedom to point things out to the official.

I want someone who garners the respect of his teammates. A guy that they all look up to or listen to. If Bradley is that guy, so be it. Him being the hardest trier doesn't equal captain.

Bornstein's stock went down (if possible)(and I actually thought he did okay at the WC but has sucked every other opportunity)

Lichaj did allright. Still young and has some potential.

Siff, no problem. Glad home team worked out. I hope you enjoyed Richmond and that the tournament went well - heard a guy in arbys yesterday talking about a big tournament, so it must have been a big event.
