Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

I fully blame my mother for this loss.

I was having dinner/family time Sat. night and put on the match, my mother wasn't playing on her laptop and not paying attention to the match, but as it went on she paid more and more attention.

She was screaming and getting into it through OT and then with about 3 minutes left said "So when we go to penalty kicks, how will that work?"

Within 15 seconds Mexico scored.

First and last time I watch with my mom.

Your mom doesn't sport much does she.

Very casual fan here. I'm tired of seeing the US represented by slow players who look half as skilled as the other side no matter who they are.

It's not really that easy to address. Despite all we have going for us (facilities, etc...), we have much against us. Soccer is in many ways unique - skill is acquired only through intense dedication, for instance, not through increased athleticism, etc... Kids here are loath to focus on one sport, and even when they do, they can't dedicate themselves to it as is done in European academies, for example. We are an oddity with our season-specific schedules; we have challenges like distance (a huge country) that others don't. I disagree with the slow comment, by the way. It's not that we're slow per se; we're just slow on the ball because, well, we don't have the same level of skill (as you suggest as well).

We're slow bc JK played all of our dinosaurs bc he was too afraid to give any of the kids a chance in a must-win game

Last night, yes, but Ph seemed to be referring to our speed in general. We're not slow as a group; we're just S-L-O-W on the ball.

This. It's been a consistent problem since I started watching in the 1994 World Cup. It's got to be more than just talent in a country of almost 320 million people.

Jurgen played an defensive midfielder that is old as fuck, so doesn't have the legs anymore, or pace ever, at an outside midfield role for 120 minutes in a must win game.

He's fucking clueless.

+1. It didn't make sense at any point in the game to have Jones in that role and it was obvious to everyone that he needed to come out in the 70th minute. It was criminal to expect him to play 90 minutes at outside mid, never mind an extra 30 minutes. Unreal.

We're slow over the ball and don't have the requisite skill to possess the ball for more than 20 seconds against Mexico. That's a problem.

But we're good at set pieces.

We're never gonna be good as long as our entire soccer culture is obsessed with Britain

We suck. Take MB4 out of the equation and were not even a top 30 team in the world. No idea what the move for the future is but I don't think it really matters either way. We just don't have the players in the pipeline to make a difference. Bitch all you want about the old guard needing to hit the nursing home but theres no young guns to fill in the vacancy.

As far as the match goes my takeaways were:

1) Mexico wanted it more than we did. After you watch a team win every 50/50 ball and get every bounce you eventually decide its not luck making it happen. They wanted to win more than we did. Plain and simple. You could see it in the players body language and emotions as well. MB4 was the only one that looked liked he cared

2) Jurgen has lost the team (obviously). Demspey didn't give a damn what the result of that match was. I know Dempsey has guts, but he couldn't have cared less about the match Saturday night from watching him play.

3) Fan split was about 70/30. Electric atmosphere. Didn't have a problem all day. I'm sure there were instances but the worst that happened to me was a "fuck your mother" in spanish as I was walking out of the stadium.

4) Pretty gutted, never really thought we would win until Wood scored. Remember the ball being in the air on Mexicos 3rd and saying out loud "please shoot tha..."

If we didn't care then I think that is even more of a reason to play the younger guys. They would have something to prove so would put in a higher work rate if nothing else.

Effort wasn't the issue. Our guys cared plenty. They were simply put in a position to fail by a manager that is struggling to walk and chew gum at the same time.

And I think that was evident in the play from Yedlin and Wood once they were brought on. Easy to say in hindsight though

Most American soccer fans are fans of British teams, MLS is focused on athleticism and strength rather than technique, fans try to make the atmosphere as British as possible, our national team focuses on scoring set pieces and against the run of play, we bunker down and try to hit on the break rather than pressing and having anything resembling a possession game. I could go on. We try to be a mini England and we get mini England results. I mean, only Anglophiles could think Bradley is a word class center mid, my god. Solid player nothing more

The disconnect here is that people watching the premier league and rooting for premier league teams are watching and rooting for many of the best players in the world. If we were obsessed with watching the English national team, you might have a point.

No idea, but I'm curious to hear the answer.
