Clemson Post Game Thoughts

Wake appears to be historically competitive this year when compared to the past 5 years.

What bothers me most right now is year #2 at Vtech is going a helleva lot better than year #2 at Wake.

Buzz Williams is a really good coach. That's why year 2 at Vtech is better than year 2 at Wake. I don't know if you can ever recruit great to Vtech, but he'll succeed because he knows how to coach. Manning has lost me with his coaching in conference games. I know he has limited options with personnel. Those that can score can't defend, those that can defend can't score. Nobody can shoot and we're really slow but I feel like a better coach would have at least 3 more conference wins right now. Finally, if anyone was concerned that we would loose manning to a better job in a year or two, I think that ship has sailed.

This. Manning isn't a very good coach, at least right now, and I'm pretty doubtful that he'll get better. I like and respect him a great deal and that won't change no matter what happens, but he was the wrong choice for us for a lot of reasons, some of which were obvious from the day he was hired. Of course, leave it to RW to make that wrong choice.

VaTech is 12-11. Wake is 10-12. That is significantly different?

That's not true, either.

We are 1-9 in the conference. Don't know what the final record will be, but 3-15 wouldn't be a bad guess.

In 2013, we were 6-12 in the conference and beat #2 Miami.

In 2014, we were 6-12 in the conference and beat #19 Carolina & #4 Duke....and we also won a game in the ACCT & ended the year with an overall winning record.

I think I'd like our starting 5 to be Crawford, Watson, Hudson, Dinos, and Thomas. At least on paper, that lineup has potential to be pretty good defensively and has 4 guys who can stretch the floor. Or replace Dinos with one of the freshman bigs if you want to sacrifice floor spacing for defense. If there's one positive takeaway from last night, it's gotta be the play from Hudson. He was aggressive on offense, drew a few fouls, made a layup, and then even hit a three. Amazing how that works. Hopefully he can build off of last night.

This

I agree. Craw is a PG. I expect him to be the starting PG next year and going forward. I think Chill will be a Taron Downey type unless he really surprises. But he has a fundamentally sound stroke as does Washington, something this team really needs. But I don't expect Chill to come in starting. Washington is still a 3-star and that's because his athleticism is limited. So I'm guarded on his ability to defend but I still think a 6'5 guy with handles, heads-up passing ability, and a really good shot is better than anything we have at the 2 right now.

Best Case scenario right there, love Taron

I really hope to be wrong on this, but all this talk of chill starting at pg is crazy. There is a reason he was not highly recruited and there is a reason he is ranked outside of the top 200. I have watched him play this year and get physically dominated by other high school point guards. He is tiny, he has a solid shot, but he is not a freak athlete and he will have trouble getting it off. Think Wilbekin with a slightly better stroke.

Crawford is the best passer we have had in years, I hope he plays pg for the next three years. This team was so much better when he was the pg, I could not understand last night why we constantly had cmm or wilbekin bringing the ball up the floor. Maybe run a few plays for craw off the ball to get him an open look, but he gets himself open looks and others with his great passing. He needs to be the primary ball handler again, like he was when we were winning games this year.
Agree with second paragraph. Chill is a much better shooter than MW though.

Speaking of LSU, ever since we beat them both teams have gone in very opposite directions.

People need to actually watch Thomas play on both ends of the court and realize he does not play any defense at all. If you listen to the games on the radio and watch the game at the same time you will hear Dinger say over and over and over that there is never any helpside defense. Nobody ever turns around in the lane to see what is going on. His own man blows by him time and time again like he is standing still and he gives no help to his teammates. Sure he gets some easy rebounds but he does not block out and he can score only with his left hand. Thomas has never ever learned in his four years here to shoot the ball with his right hand. That is basketball 101 when going to your right to learn the footwork and use the right hand. Thomas is just very deficient in so many ways and looks like he has never worked on free throws nor wants to play defense. He is just weak as a senior leader. And do not get me started on what Cody does not bring to the team. He has just been nonexistent since coming back.

Good points, Bones.

Chill is no Taron. TD averaged over 33 points a game at Oxford Webb. But Chill is a very good shooter, ball handler and a heady player.

My thought was "how in the hell did we beat Indiana, UCLA, Arkansas, LSU? Or UNC-G and Coastal Carolina for that matter." It doesn't even seem like the same team.

This renders the excuses moot. We can clearly be a better team than this. We were clearly a better team 5 weeks ago.

Just feels like other teams in the nation are learning and getting better as the season progresses. We're going backwards. Maybe it's poor coaching. Maybe the team is having trouble adjusting to CMM. Hard not to be really frustrated

Moore is shooting 73% from the line this year, which is better than Crawford, Hudson, Watson, McClinton, Thomas, and CMM.

Point take, but he has only attempted 11 free throws. Not much of a sample size. Another 0-2 night and his precentage plummets to the low 60%'s, which is about where I would place him based on his form. He will be fine in the future, but he isn't a 75% shooter right now, he just hasn't taken many. IMO.

I started to delete all this when I realized what a fruitless exercise it is - no one cares what we think. I just get frustrated because our players all seem to have areas where they excel and show flashes of goodness - but the overall picture is just awful. I think a true genius coach could probably mold these guys into a decent team - hell, we were more than decent for a month or two there. We just can't maintain any kind of consistency.

I think Manning needs to have a serious discussion with every player and make sure they understand what their strengths are - and what won't be tolerated - especially on offense.
CMM needs to only drive and dish or drive for the layup/contact - no jumpers. Focus on defense and getting comfortable on the pine.
Wilbekin needs to only take uncontested 3-ptrs when he is on balance - and get comfortable sitting with CMM.
Hudson needs to take mid-range jumpers only - 9-17 feet - unless he drives to create contact and a foul. He should otherwise focus on rebounding.
Dinos needs to focus on getting open in the corners.
Crawford needs to take over.
Moore needs to keep his hands up - on defense and when catching/rebounding the ball. Dunk everything in sight. Contest shots but don't aggressively try to block - with his reach it will happen. Get his stamina up - we need him on the floor.
Collins needs to stop with the silly fouls - move his feet on defense. Catch the ball inside and learn to finish through contact. Develop a baby hook over both shoulders.
DT needs to finish through contact so he doesn't have to worry about the FTs so much. Keep playing hard and stop worrying about the officials.
Watson - IDK, play tough D and be relaxed and ready when he gets an open 3.
GMC - recover his pre-injury form?

Good shooters can't hurt this team, we need them badly.
