Dino: WFU source sez atmosphere in AD is "toxic"

If anyone in the AD's office expected to win anything this year in either basketball or football they were on some serious drugs. These 11 pages weren't even livened up with enough jokes. If someone thinks they'll get something out of reading the previous pages just don't. Dino whined about toxicity.

Cool redacted was around for years overlooking an epic dumpster fire and Grobe pretty obviously stopped caring before he was finally forced to "retire". Next year will be better. Talent is needed.

THAT WAS A BIG PART OF THE PROBLEM, YOU DUNCE.

Weber is good at the coaching part of being a head basketball coach. He is not good at recruiting. And if you can't recruit well at Illinois coming off a title game run, why would you be able to recruit well to Manhattan, KS?

It was just a very uninspiring choice. Very similar to Haith at Missouri.

And, the hiring isn't the only side of the equation here. Martin had a 0.684 record at K-State before he started openly begging for the Miami job and then ultimately left for the greener pastures of...Scar?

So, you don't want the AD from a school that lost their basketball coach to South Carolina. I can understand that.

What I don't understand is why you think the assistant AD of a school who lost their basketball coach to South Carolina seems like a sound choice.

No kidding. He was still playing baseball.

Then I am confused to your point? Buddie had nothing to do with Odom leaving. And I don't think it's quite fair to say that Wake lost its basketball coach to SCar, not in the same since that KSU did.

It was a LOWF joke.

If Buddie ran the Clawson search than he seems like a sound choice to me. Anyone else internal, no thanks.

His background is development so hopefully he has good fundraising chops too.

I'd go with John Currie before Buddie. Nothing against Mike, but I'd prefer someone who has some experience running an athletic department.

What has Currie done at K State that is particularly impressive?

My real point though is that I don't think Buddie would be a good choice...I agree with Neidbala that Buddie needs experience running an athletic department....or at the very least, be the #2 guy at a legit program.

Here is Buddie's background
--retires from baseball in '04.
--finishes up degree in '04.
--immediately gets job at Wake fundraising for Calloway
--'06 begins work in the Deacon Club
--'09 began work in Athletic Administration

I am not saying Currie is THE guy, but he crushes Buddie in experience. He has experience outside of his alma mater (being named K-State AD the same year Buddie began work in Athletic Administration). Currie did win the Bobby Dodd AD of the Year award in 2013, so that might be considered particularly impressive. Give me that guy all day over someone whose 5+ years working in Adm. coincide with the 5 worst years at Wake Forest since Buddie and Currie entered Wake Forest in the late 80s.

Geez.

If the problem is so bad the BoT needs to get involved!

The BoT are a bunch of self-serving, arrogant, demanding caricatures who know ZERO about running an institution of higher education.

They might know how to run a business or a political campaign, quite well, but they have no clue how to run a University or Athletic Department (disaster).

Don't agree? Just ask a BoT member the last time they had a conversation with a student or faculty member. Not a meeting or glass of wine at a fundraiser, but a conversation.

So here is what I've learned from this thread (I've marked my favorite):

Mike Buddie is a Wellman mini-me.
Wellman is a puppet for hatch.
Wellman is an evil overlord.
Wellman is brain-damaged and is merely a figurehead.
Don Flow is really the man pulling the strings.
There is a toxic relationship between our biggest donors and the AD.
*Wellman waited until Bz's daughter started at Wake before hiring him.
Cassteven is responsible for Dino's payout.
Manning and Clawson have the real leverage in the department.
Dino was a horrible coach.
Dino was a great coach.

Having not remembered what I posted on this thread a year ago, I had a look. Y'all are fucking delusional.

I mean Dino has been gone from the department for five years and to my knowledge doesn't have many close connections left there. Doesn't mean the atmosphere is toxic or isn't currently, but I'd be wary about giving his opinion much more weight than your own

Dino should let sleeping dogs lie or he should actually tell a story if that's what he feels is necessary. Otherwise, yeah, it's petty... he should leave shit-talking his old school to others.

Perhaps someone in the AD feels like something must be done and therefore sought ought the person who would be in a strong position to start making things happen in the media...and then on the ground.

A majority of people who care about what Dino said and bother enough to figure out who he is talking about post on this board.

His comments were relevant to the conversation and made sense. It's not petty.

If Wellman's replacement comes from within the current department someone should be shot.

This.

And Dino sucked as a coach. Firing Dino was not a bad decision, hiring Bz the worst decision Wellman ever made.

61-31 in 3 years, 2 NCAA tournaments, and was offered the CBI I believe in Dino's first year (17-13), instead of the NIT and Wellman said no. That record doesn't suck. Those 3 NBA players who were recruited were young, two sophomores, and a freshman. Only one, Teague, has had any measurable impact in the NBA. The other two have been traded a number of times, with Johnson spending time in NBDL. I thought he was a fairly good defensive coach, also. 61-31 does not deserve to be fired after 3 years, and then keeping Bz 4 years who went 51-76 is nonsense. I heard Wellman's press conference. He referred to lack of post season success as the primary reason he discharged Gaudio, but we had beaten Texas in OT that year in the tournament. Wellman took care of not having to worry about lack of post-season success when he let Dino go. We have had two coaches now who have had seasons with 20 or more losses since Dino left. And no post season in sight. The team is a revolving door of players who have left and gone to teams who win and they get to play post season and fulfill their talent potential: Fischer at BYU, Desrosiers at Providence, Cavanaugh at GW, Adala Moto at Towson. Even Tree got to the NCAA tournament with Iona. Maybe if we kept Dino none of this would have happened and they would have been playing for us and we would be in the post season and not writing and wondering about it now. And there never would have been a Bz or a DM to complain about. 3 years, 61-31, and firing him is not giving him much of a chance. Our last six years could have been written differently.

If I could write, I would have written this...EXACTLY!

memphisslim nailed it...like him or not Dino was screwed and we've paid for it ever since
