I don't see this scenario happening in the next 2-3 years but I wouldn't be surprised to the NCAA is taken over by the power conferences in coming years. Realistically, with the revenue generated through the TV contracts alone, the power five conferences may start asking themselves why they aren't their own entity. This would completely destroy the little schools but I can see a scenario that ends up eliminating the NCAA.

And, given the political climate in which we live; where money talks and bullshit walks, I'm not sure I'd discount the NCAA's capacity to get Congress involved.

NCAA needs the P5 conferences because of the money they generate. They are the drivers in the TV money machine. The P5 schools may well need the NCAA to keep the veneer of football and basketball being an "ancillary activity" to the primary education mission of the schools. Lose that and the IRS and/or Congress might have issues with the tax exempt status of the booster clubs etc.

And it's now been confirmed by UNC:

So, they now have 90 days to review, respond and self-impose. Then the NCAA has another 60 to respond to that. And then the meeting with the NCAA and a ruling that can take weeks/months. So, this likely plays out all of the way until the start of next season. Should be a fun summer of recruiting for ole' Huckleberry Roy, especially if there's more allegations in the new NOA as expected. There will be a new round of articles, speculation, etc in the media. Might be a good time to hang it up and enjoy the beach for Roy.

#1 - I think UNC gets 5 yr probation and censure. And a $20mm fine. 1 yr PS ban for all sports. 2 yr PS ban for MBB and FB. 3 yr for WBB

#2 - I think you will see up to 10 seasons vacated in WSoc. They had a 10 yr stretch of blatant abuse of those classes. MSoc has small exposure

#3 - 1993 and 2005 titles are vacated ( I am told 2009 is likely safe for some reason). Those 2 years are not even close after recertification

#4 - Conference then will require vacation of titles to match NCAA.

The timing of Carolina "confirming" the receipt of the ANOA is interesting in light of the NBA early entry eligibility deadline expiring at 11:59pm last night (4/24).

I don't think the issue is whether or not schools may one day up and leave the NCAA. The issue is whether they'll do it because the hammer falls on UNC for some of the most worst academic violations to ever become public. And the answer to that is a resounding no. Nobody is going to think UNC is being unfairly punished if they get a postseason ban and some scholarship reductions for a couple years, even other schools who may be doing the same thing.
