Redskins Name Change Thread

Just seemed like a purposeful attempt to avoid what I assumed was the more accepted Native American moniker.

This thread's argument is as fucking stupid as white inbred fucktards claiming its ok to call a black person (african american?) the n-word because "they call each other that".

The bottom line is changing the name to a more appropriate mascot/name would hurt NO ONE, while evidence shows that the current name could potentially hurt or offend a large group or subset of people.

Whine about lib'ral PC bullshit all you want, it's still an unnecessary part of a sport that will not be damaged or hurt by changing the name.

ETA: for anyone confused

Dan Snyder, owner of the Redskins, has said he doesn't want to change the name. He has a lot of built up brand name recognition, a song commissioned and written for the team, lots of merchandise, a bunch of players in the football hall of fame as Washington Redskins... So if you think no one has a stake in the game, you are kidding yourself. If the Redskin's name is changed, how would you propose handling the 80 years of history of the Redskins? How would you keep current and future players connected to the history of great Redskins players? Just a few of the issues to think through from a practical standpoint when you call for the name change.

If it's offensive a large group in our society, then the technicalities shouldn't matter

So if 100 Native Americans are polled and only 10 come back and say it's somewhat offensive, while 90 take no offense at all, you think the name should be changed?

Absolutely, bro. Didn't you know that today's Native Americans just aren't educated on their history? They should be offended because we fucking said so!

Same way as the Washington Bullets? Just a thought.

It would depend on the poll. I don't think its ever easy to conduct a non-biased poll, so a poll paid for by the side wanting to keep the name would not be something to pull decisions from.

Commission another song? The current team's merchandise would see a spike in sales if a name change occurred. The new team's merchandise would also sell in record numbers as the pro name change (and really any fans at some point) would want to update to match the new image. Players in the HOF or history books would be treated as any other team that changes its name/mascot. Current and future players wouldn't magically be flabbergasted about who they play for or what the history is of the team. Like I said, names have been changed before, there is precedent and any repercussions would be minimal in scope and the argument could be made that the team could see a HUGE spike in sales of current/past/future merchandise.

A name change would also more than likely draw MORE businesses and sponsorship opportunities with a huge majority of businesses lean toward political correctness (whether you dolts wanna agree with it or not).

Or the Charlotte Hornets/Bobcats/Hornets, or the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, or the Tennessee Oilers, or the Anaheim Mighty Ducks

It's absurd and an embarrassment to continue using a racial/ethnic slur as a team's nickname/mascot. And even as a white non-Native, I am offended by the name. It's idiotic to suggest that only Native Americans can be offended by this. Change the name, get it over with, enjoy the spike in sales of old and new merchandise, and move on to issues that actually require work, effort and are more serious than this pathetic attempt to hold on to racist traditions that can be corrected with minimal negative repercussions to anyone involved.

Keep carrying that cross, bro! If the Native Americans aren't offended by it, it's so courageous of you to take that burden.

No argument there. But when the topic is whether ESPN suppresses dissenting opinions from its own, it is valid evidence.

I don't think it's that they suppress dissenting opinions other than their own, but is more of a "as an international company we don't want to be viewed as anti-inclusive and we told Schilling to stop doing what he was doing repeatedly that was bringing us bad publicity and he kept doing it so we fired him."

Which large group is it offensive to? White liberals?

You are 99.5% right.

Yep...no Native Americans are offended by it.

Keep patting yourself on the back like all idiots too stupid to see they're on the wrong side of history...join the NC republicans, any conservatives who fight to the "death" over gay rights, segregationists, etc etc etc. You're supporting something that just will not stand the test of time and it would just work out better for everyone if the name was changed sooner rather than later.

Get it done and move on to REAL issues.

I find it weird that people saying Native Americans aren't worried about the Redskins are only talking that thing Native Americans aren't worried about.

A guest on Boston Public Radio (lunch time bloc on NPR) from DC who they have on the show on a recurring basis, argued that if even 10% of Native Americans are offended by the name then that's 10% too many and it should change. He's black and said that if a poll came out saying only 10% of the black population was offended by the use of the "n word" would we have a corporate entity named after it?

I don't know if I agree with this or not, but figured it was good fodder for discussion on here.

Bro, we’re the victims now!

Also, bro, this is bigger than gay rights. This is the God blessed Washington REDSKINS !
