General Election Thread: Two Weeks Out

1. My main point is the racial divide in our country didn't just appear out of nowhere when Donald Trump decided to run for office.

2.The other view would be that President Obama has done little to nothing to help diffuse the racial tension in his presidential tenure. He's helped wage a war against LEO's, hes failed to put a process in place to eliminate some of the awful crime in Chicago, Illinois, where he happened to be a senator. He ran a campaign on hope and change, but most African American's I've spoken to about politics, don't feel that their race is in ANY better position than they were 8 years ago.

Clearly it isn't 1. because we all know that there was no racism in America until Obama came into office and enabled the things you listed in 2. to happen.

Pretty snarky because that's not at all what I said. No one is saying racism didn't exist before Obama. Come on man.

Oh?

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...-chair-kathy-miller-resigns-ohio-racism-obama

"The video included an interview with Miller in which she said there was “no racism” during the 1960s and claimed black people who have not succeeded over the past half-century only have themselves to blame.

“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” she said.

“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”

Miller added: “I don’t think there was any racism until Obama got elected. We never had problems like this … Now, with the people with the guns, and shooting up neighborhoods, and not being responsible citizens, that’s a big change, and I think that’s the philosophy that Obama has perpetuated on America.”

We can all agree that blacks have never had it worse than they have it now, right?

and this is a common belief among many Trump supporters. Don't kid yourself. These people have no interest in addressing racial concerns in this country.

In the 60's there was no racism - we just all went to school.

Numbers, I think it's safe to say that our country hasn't been this divided racially since the 60's. Serious question, why do you think that is? I didn't and am not placing all of the blame on the Obama administration. I'm just curious what your thoughts are.

Oh, I don't know...........maybe it has something to do with cops killing black people at a record pace in questionable circumstances. We just had two in the last couple of days

Yeah Trump panders with the best of them. You think he has any plans or ideas to help racial division. A central tenant is directly against a large proportion of the country in Hispanics. Throw in his hardcore supporters are uneducated white males and you have two major divisions already.

I prefer "playfully sarcastic."

fair.

My post wasn't intended to be critical of you, I was more referencing the Ohio chair above (in both posts which prompted my first response to you). Then the second post logically flowed.

The comments from Miller were nothing short of ignorant and egregiously incorrect. I can not deny that.

I don't know if I agree or not that the country hasn't been this divided racially since the 1960's (see Rodney King riots), but that's just an aside.

I think social media, the 24/7 news cycle, video of police violence incidents, and a legitimate focus by large swaths of the population on societal injustices in general (be it based on race, income, gender identity, etc.) have allowed information to infiltrate more households. What was once considered to be a joking "driving while black" stereotype and "oh black people don't like the police" came into people's living rooms through social media and videos of police brutality. It's one thing to hear "a black man was shot by a cop in Tulsa" and another to see the video of what happened. Police accountability and holding those in power responsible for wrongdoings seemingly only followed the latter occurring.

I mean we had a Republican Congressman in NC say that blacks hated whites "because they are successful and have jobs".

Read an interesting article within the last couple of days (maybe even on here) that said Trump's plan in pandering to black audiences didn't have anything to do with increasing his popularity with people of color, but was just so he appeared to be more palatable to white voters who now would say "look he isn't racist."

The left keeps trying to label people right wing because it does not want to deal with the issues and concerns of people who disagree with the left raise. The basic argumentation of the left against any dissenting voices has mostly become deny, ridicule, label; rinse, repeat. Like I said before, there is lots of evidence for this leftist behavior on these boards.

I think the right wing does a pretty good job of labeling themselves.
