FSU Game Review / Bye Week and Army Game Thread

I also stand on my point that we had the better football players and thus better team. If we had run a 4x100 relay, weightlifting contest, long jump, etc. contest against FSU's team, maybe we lose. The game was football and we had the better team in 06, 07, 08. I think it was Craig James that said during the broadcast of the 2007 Thursday night against FSU, that believe it or not, Wake Forest had the better football talent that night. I think if you go back an watch those games our offense wasn't really all that creative, we were much more "creative" in the early Grobe years.

The NFL disagrees with you. 14 players from the 2006 Florida State team played in the NFL (including Graham Gano). WF had 6.

The comparison was to "athletes" or athletic talent, or the combined bigger, faster, stronger argument. And in that regard FSU has always had a edge on us. I stand on my point, it was mainly the creativity of the O, players that believed in it, and could execute it. Clawson doesn't seem to want to step outside of a conservative O philosophy or game plan. This is not only evidenced by his 3 years here but looking back at the way his previous teams have played, as well.

Lee was a specimen in regards to being an athletic QB with size and he had some good games. I remember him beating Alabama one year, but overall he wasn't the best QB on the roster. Not odd for elite programs.

That creative offense in 2006 produced 306 yards per game, good for 96th in the country. The scoring offense, buoyed by field position and turnovers, finished 78th in the country at 21.6 ppg.

Fans are always going to complain/muse about the play calling/offensive scheme. "Let's run more reverses/orbits" It's amusing.

I personally find the similarities between this year and 2006 to be pretty remarkable with just completely different contexts surrounding the teams as far as the ACC landscape goes.

Both teams had a top 30-40 defense, both teams generated a lot of turnovers while generally protecting the ball well, both teams have had injuries at critical skill positions, both teams have a defense that has far more NFL potential and future players than the offense, and both teams are pretty poor on offense.

This year's team is 117th out of 128 in total offense (and gaining 30 yards more a game than the 2006 team) while the 2006 team was 96th out of, I believe, 119 teams.

But we had Riley Skinner. Would get back to the Orange bowl with him this year

One, maybe small, reason why the offense is rated so poorly is that the defense is very good. WF can win games with an offense that doesn't turn the ball over and plays field position. If the defense sucked, WF would follow a different gameplan to try to win which would require more risk-taking, would generate more yards and points. If WF was giving up 35+ a game, WF would be chucking the ball around a lot more.

Agreed. Playcalling is the least compelling critique by fans. It's also the easiest.

Of course, I will always rail against Lobo's shotgun dive on 4th and goal against Purdue.

Running a very basic offensive scheme against a team with bigger/faster/stronger athletes just doesn't typically work, though. A delayed zone read up the middle, over and over, does nothing to throw the defense off guard, and allows continued penetration.

If you were a defensive end or blitzing linebacker, wouldn't you love to play against our offense? I know I would. Nothing to keep them honest. 90+% of plays are runs up the middle or straight dropbacks.

The scoreboard of the games in 06, 07, and 08 disagree with that.

This is like the "who cares if they had 5 stars arguments, we got diamond in the roughs". Give me the 5 stars all day, every day for a sustained period of time over the 3 stars.

Well, sure give me the 5 stars all day and over the course of time the 5 stars will win out more often than not. My point is that during that span we have the better players and it showed on the field.

Our running game is much improved this year. The play-calling likely has a lot to do with the type of backs we have, power backs bursting for yards up the middle. Delayed handoffs against FSU actually seems pretty smart because the initial push from the D line would be hard to run through - wait for them to continue to pressure and open up holes for you.

Agree to some extent. This offense wouldn't be that good regardless of what the defense does or did.

While this isn't really intended to refute your point at all, I wanted to point out that no, Florida State would not have beaten us in a 4x100 relay that season!

In fact, our relay team--bolstered by our wide receiver corp and anchored by the inestimable Kevin Marion--actually won the ACC championship that year in that event, outpacing for the win a couple of Florida State footballers including their kick returner Michael Garvin. One of the most exciting races I've ever watched.

Only my boy Willie Idlette represented the gridiron deacs on the track that day in the 4x4, but we just beat out FSU there too. Really a banner year for the deacs against the Noles.

Although the next year we got whooped by FSU and Clemson and had to settle for third. FSU added a little bro called Walter Dix and Clemson's relay had Travis Padgett, CJ Spiller, and Jacoby Ford -- all names Wake would come to know through unfortunate circumstances.

Our backup WRs (Claude/Washington) are not good and I dont understand why they get any meaningful snaps. Its a shame we have ignored Lewis & Hines (to a lesser extend Wade) so much this year. Those guys are simply playmakers and we are wasting time when they aren't in the game being targeted.

I think Clawson and Manning both like to have depth for the sake of depth but don't quite realize how that some of their depth is a huge dropoff.
