Defensive Coordinator Search

The recruiting dead period ends on Wednesday. Starting Wednesday, it's a 3 week sprint to national signing day.

It can't be good that hiring a DC is taking this long. A lot of lost time in getting situated moving into the final stages of putting this class together.

As long as we hire by the dead period, it's fine.

More important to get the right hire. This is an enormously important decision for Clawson.

Guess Smith is not going to be DC. Would have happened by now if it was going to. IMO

I think the opposite given Football Scoop's reputation. I'd be surprised if it wasn't Smith, but it's very possible that Football Scoop dropped the news before interviews had been completed and/or contract terms had been fully negotiated. Which I'm sure would have thrilled Clawson.

The DC search at Ole Miss took 20 days. Notre Dame's search was 19 days after the end of their season. Florida took 24 days after they lost Geoff Collins to Temple.

It's only been 24 days since Elko got the ND job, but more importantly it's only been 13 days since the Military Bowl. A hire in the next 7-10 days would put Wake's search right in line with those other schools (if you start counting from the Military Bowl).

SOURCE: Minnesota is hiring Arkansas defensive coordinator Robb Smith for the same position. An official announcement is expected later this week. Smith had been mentioned as a candidate at Wake Forest but instead will join P.J. Fleck's new staff. Arkansas could look internally for Smith's replacement, and defensive backs coach Paul Rhoads is a possibility there.

That's pretty interesting.

Especially since Fleck was hired after Smith was linked to us. The simplest interpretation is that Fleck stole Smith.

Yup...maybe we will get Claeys in an effective swap.

Another possible explanation could be that Clawson and Co. decided to go a different route.

My guess is that we promote Cohen, but that's not based off of anything I've heard, just a gut feeling.

Well that took about an hour for me to be proven wrong!

I'll take it.

It's all for the best. The dwarf jokes would have gotten old.

is a former P5 coach fired under strange circumstances really gonna take a coordinator job at MSD?

Is this Claeys thing real or is it just a random name people are pulling out of their butts?

Where else is he going to go this late in the game? We have a lot of appeal at this juncture. Top 25 defense, good job security, runs a similar scheme, it's not usually that cold.

Counterpoint...he sounded like a complete damn moron talking about sexual assault and I don't really want that kind of mentality at Wake (or really any institution, but especially Wake) for people who are teaching young men life lessons.
