Official '16-17 NBA Thread: not with a bang but a whimper

I love the condescension from hinkie truthers when they're now having to dump their "assets" for pennies on the dollar because all their assets have netted them is a bunch of bigs who are either shitty or will never be healthy. And now they're staring down the barrel of chasing 7th and 8th seeds for the foreseeable future, right where they started.

76ers just got the #1 pick and Simmons and it was like, "the process is vindicated"! on twitter... if they had gotten the 4th pick would it have not been? like there's no difference, literally the process should be immune to that.

i'll never forget the 2011 draft lottery, NBA twitter cheering with glee that 7 win charlotte didn't win the brow draft.

Yeah, this is the worst post. If there was ever a franchise that wasn't capped into a future of 7th and 8th seeds it would be the Sixers.

76ers are fine, they're in a good spot, i feel like more than anything i hate the fans not the band

it's like the opposite of fight club. rule #1 about the process is you have to talk about the process. and if someone isn't all in on it, it's not even a basketball discussion, it's an intellectual thing you just don't get, because Hinkie is smart.

i've been sucked into posting about them all day and this discussion is going to happen a dozen more times before the season ends.

like every time 2&2 posts something stupid it turns into this huge series of posts and then even spills over on to the hornets thread. every few weeks, same freaking thing.

at least all the fan fiction with trading okafor and a 1st for the Brow with rj is over.

I think it is more just like a life approach thing more than a basketball thing. It's really more of a discussion on finding market inefficiencies and navigating highly regulated industries.

he singlehandedly made me want to troll the hornets thread

rj's hatred of stats just comes from good-natured naivete

2&2's is spiteful

yes, as long as he doesn't have to worry at all about building a basketball team, hinkie is amazing at acquiring draft picks. everyone agrees.

and if he drafts a shitty player at a redundant position, it's defs the owner's fault.

one thing i've noticed about philly fans living here (and it's way worse in other sports) is the chip on their shoulder--almost certainly carries into discussions about their teams, like they're misunderstood or not properly appreciated, it's dumb

the city is basically new york's dumb little brother

the opener at the comedy show last night started with "I love Philly. Lived here for a long time. I live in New York now because...I graduated."

hinkie was a glimmer of hope in a city with abysmal GMs like Ruben Amaro

Like the palmab03 invitational

they got the best of what hinkie had to offer before transitioning into their next stage. i don't think colangelo is awesome or anything, but the nerlens deal, while probably not good wasn't really bad either. it was a meh deal probably, i'm also reacting to the Process-ers on NBA twitter that overreacted to that deal as well.

vwls made a good argument for just straight up keeping nerlens, but that's not really ideal either and not cause for total disgust at the deal. esp since the other deals colangelo has pulled have been decent IMO

Out of curiosity what's the best case scenario for the process?

Hope Lakers pick falls out of top 3 so you can get 1 of Fultz/Ball/Smith and one of Jackson/Taytum/Monk, put those with Simmons Saric Embiid, add a top 5 pick in 2019 to whichever position needs the most help (Kings I think, can't keep track), and then cash in assets to rent a star when the time is right hoping he will re-sign?

something like that, yeah

and embiid stays healthy and simmons is good

sixers have some nice role playing pieces too, like robert covington is gonna get paid big time

Yeah, Sixers have been a 50+ win pace team this year during Embiid's minutes. So if he can be healthy on a consistent basis it is a massive ceiling.

they were a top 5 defense for most of the year when he was on the floor, and that's with guys like sergio rodriguez and tj mcconnell and nik stauskas and gerald henderson at the guard positions, all net negatives defensively

embiid is just an absolute monster defensively, as is covington

their offensive rating is less good, but they're a very good passing and floor spacing team, trying to model after the spurs in many ways

I certainly don't want to be annoying talking about Hinkie and the Sixers all the time on the board. But for me, quite honestly, the Sixers are the most interesting sports story of the last 5-10 years in any sport. And this is a sports message board. So I really like talking about it.

But that's because of my personal career and interests in finance and predictive analytics ....but I understand other people would rather talk about the games or whatever

idk man, i don't feel like it's all that interesting and i feel like the same points and posts are repeated constantly. i don't think it's all that complicated.

like hinkie's manifesto, it was ridiculously pretentious while also being completely banal

I kind of want to see that happen from a basketball standpoint. Ball/Monk/Simmons/Saric/Embiid plus someone like Zion Williamson in 2019 and then add a vet in 2020 when they are ready to make a leap could be a pretty deadly team.
