BSD Article: Wake Forest Student Section

This. Nothing say preppy prick like a bow tie.

No arguments here. That said, the bow tie is an essential (and unique) element to the mascot.

No. The color of the shirt doesn't matter. Students don't really like to conform. Problem with football games is everyone is trying to peacock about with their own trendy clothes. For basketball you have the additional problem of basketball games, outside of a couple a year, aren't really viewed as "events". Students just come from whatever they were doing for a couple hours if they can be bothered to make it at all.

If we had colors that could more easily be incorporated into dresses, button downs, polos, and sweaters, we would be much better off with respect to the look of the student section.

Something that shocked me when I got to Vanderbilt was how many girls wear black sundresses to football games. I won't claim that the football team gets the best attendance in the world, but the girls you see around the tailgates and who go into the games, typically are wearing school colors. It seems like the schools are pretty similar in terms of demographics and psychographics so I'm not sure what the reason.

Girls all over the SEC wear school colors. Same with frat bros. Wake students just don't really give a shit.

Right, but why? There's nothing fundamentally different about the student population at Wake and at Vandy. If there isn't something fundamentally different, then the school or some external factor must be guiding people's choice in what they wear to athletic contests. Wake isn't some aberration out in the world as a southern, private school with douchy students.

Compare the demographics of Wake and Vandy to see if there's any key differences. My guess is that Vandy is just big enough compared to Wake to make it look better.

The parents of the Deacon are totally ridiculous and should be never be seen in public. they are wimpy and pathetic.

I don't disagree that Wake students don't give a shit, but Vanderbilt is a SEC school in name only. I think there's more to it than just conference affiliation.

Sure, Vandy is bigger which would explain seeing more students in black at football games - but your last post was drawing a distinction between Wake and Vandy/SEC schools. If it's a size thing in general then that's an explanation, but it's a different explanation than "Wake students just don't really give a shit."

I wonder if Vandy is more southern than Wake. By that I mean, smart/rich kids from SEC country end up there. They know the culture before they arrive. They just carry that attitude/fandom/whatever over to black and gold, but that's just a hunch.

“The Deac Freaks”- A rhyming student section name at Wake Forest? Stop me if you’ve seen this before. In fact, this was actually the original name of the Screamin’ Demons around 20 years ago.

When I was a student, Deac Freak was football, and Screamin Demon was basketball. Anyway, I'm attached to Tie-Dye because it was what was introduced while I was there, but it was always a weird fit for us. I'd be OK with a change so long as it doesn't require me to wear a collared shirt. Like the single color idea, would prefer gold to black but could go either way, although I shouldn't get a vote ahead of the current students.

Girls aren't going to wear old gold. Well I should say basic white girls at Wake. It will wash them out.

Wake has #TooManyYankees

So other than winning what would you do to improve student participation in terms of showing up and wearing school colors?

The answer here appears to be "nothing, we can't be like vandy, so just wait until we win." Noted.

Much of that falls to Manning and/or Clawson. Charismatic coaches can create some buy-in. Other than that, I just doubt there is a silver bullet.

I've been as big a critic of the AD/sports marketing as anyone, but as I said earlier I'm not going to jump on board with "nothing we can do folks, so why try?" I mean if that's the logic let's just fire the entire sports marketing department. Just win and people will come! No need to market.
