Throwing in the chair: The increasingly bizarre & sad legacy of Bob Knight & Indiana

With Knight, the ironies and contradictions always wreathed around each other. The same man who demanded discipline from his players, showing so little impulse control himself. The figure who demanded unwavering loyalty from those around him, quick to excommunicate friends from his inner circle and turn on allies (read: Mike Krzyzewski, among many others). The coach who sometimes spoke in the most profane terms imaginable, prudishly forbidding the Assembly Hall crowd from chanting BULL-SHIT. The teacher who stressed attention to detail, going about his own business with active disdain for nuance.

Bitter old man might be the phrase in heaviest rotation to describe present-day Knight. But almost half a damn century since Knight first planted his flag in Indiana, it’s clear that he has become something worse. He is now the rabbit, annoying but ultimately insignificant. We can hunt the rabbit. Or, chastened by history, we can pay the rabbit little mind and move ahead, focusing on what really matters.

Knight is a douche. Always was. He was a douche who won so he was considered cool and tough. But in the end there's just too much douchedom. Ignore the rabbit.

Despite my agreement with the general sentiment, that article is ripe with ad hominem logical fallacies. Obviously his point is that Bob Knight is a hypocrite, which is fine, but that doesn't mean he's wrong about the standard that he expected from his student-athletes.

Isn't exacting standards via a career of student athlete abuse an logical fallacy?

Bob Knight's just like plenty of people out there in America today: an old, bitter, white guy. That's exactly why lots of basketball fans love him. Because they're old, bitter, white guys too.

Bobby Knight is just a loathsome human being- he was a great basketball coach but an awful person.

Don't be racist.

I'm an Indiana grad and a huge IU fan and I fully agree with this take.

THe older I get the more I realize that great coaches who are also great human beings are few and far between. I'm sure they are out there but good lord most of the great ones are complete assholes.

I'm an "old white guy" who thought Knight was a d-bag in my younger years and still do today. And I don't know many "bitter" people my age (bkf aside): most of us have worked hard & saved all our lives, married/never divorced and are about ready to enjoy our leisure time, grandkids, pensions, 401Ks, and social security; time to turn the keys over to you "young guns". Enjoy!

True. Most of that list is able to hide it a little better than Bobby Knight was.

Don't forget Spurrier. He has his framed picture on HIS side of the bed.

This will how you how old I am but Tom Landry won in style and didn't act like an ass. There are probably a few others but not many.
