Official '16-17 NBA Thread: not with a bang but a whimper

It goes back to the same question about what the meaning of "Most Valuable" is, but in light of his former teammate leading his new team to an emphatic title win and getting Finals MVP, yes I do think it will be a bad look for Russell Westbrook to now be named league MVP

Come on. Dude averaged a triple-double. It won't look that stupid.

He averaged a triple double as a guard in a league where rebounds for guards are now significantly easier than at any time before because: (a) most teams on offense chuck and bail after one shot and don't even attempt an offensive rebound, resulting in a bunch of defenders standing under the basket choosing who gets it, and (b) said strategy increases the number of overall possessions and thus many more opportunities for a guard to get those uncontested rebounds. What Westbrook did was still amazing, but is definitely watered down by the style of the league. It would be kind of like giving Calvin Johnson the NFL MVP for setting the record for receiving yards in 2012; it is undoubtedly impressive but the style of the league plays a big part in it. Had he "just" averaged 31/10 on this year's Thunder would he still have won it? He would be in the conversation no doubt, but might not have won.

It's like when Steve Nash won the MVP awards. Not the most deserving and people will talk about it, but it won't be terrible.

I mean if he was that valuable they woulda won.

Also, Player Lebron is v good. Coach Lebron and GM Lebron pretty much blow though, so can't really feel sorry for the guy.

Who would be a good look?

I mean, Coach LeBron and GM LeBron have 3 straight finals and a championship. 28 other franchises would take that kind of production.

There is a NBA Finals MVP.

There is a regular season MVP. Not sure why people conflate MVP with best player.

There isn't much doubt that LeBron is the best player in the NBA, but the regular season isn't a priority for him. His team finished tied with Utah, Toronto and the Clips with the 5th best record in the NBA in 2016-7, and LeBron intentionally skipped regular season games because he has stated that he feels the post-season freshness is more important than grinding-out regular season wins. Durant missed almost a quarter of the regular season because of injury; IMO, Durant is a definitively better player than Harden or Westbrook, but there is no reasonable way to argue that Durant had a better 2016-7 regular season than either.

As long as the NBA is going to give out awards based upon regular season performance, those that have the best regular seasons are going to win the award. Don't see it as embarrassing or stupid, just don't equate MVP with best player.

Obviously I'm not a huge fan of RW getting the MVP award in general anyway, but also having it be awarded two weeks after the season is over and we all know how the playoffs ended is something I have to think the NBA will reconsider. Maybe this award show will be popular but to be so far removed from the action is strange. Guess it gives dummies like me something to complain about and the talking heads on ESPN more fodder for dumb programming.

Good post by Pilchard above

vry true. You have to wonder though what their ceiling would be with a GM that can actually make decisions and a real coach.

Like Lue did not call one timeout when GS went on that 17-2 run or whatever in the 2nd. What would this team look like with Blatt (or Tibbs or Stevens) and Wiggins instead of Lue and Love.

I'm not sure anyone was going to stop this GS team, but an interesting what if.

Yeah. I wonder if Lebron would have been better off letting Riley and Spo rebuild around him. They wouldn't have had Kyrie and the #1 pick to play with but coaching and management would be much better.

Lol. Did rchildress die?

Nah, I'm a wake fan that grew up in Raleigh. Seeing a team full of douchebags with an even worse fan base win simply by stockpiling talent while your favorite team comes up short once again isn't new to me.

Congrats to the Warriors and the Silicon Valley bros who spend $100k to watch a sport they started following 3 years ago. And good for KD for completely "cementing his legacy" by being the guy on a team where he didn't even need to be the guy.

I will say I'm pretty bummed we didn't get to see the guy who gave up on the best duo in the league because he blew a 3-1 playoff lead and the team he joined that needed help because they blew a 3-1 playoff lead collectively blow a 3-0 lead to a team they were 10 ppg better than in the regular season.

And I still think the Warriors only get 1 more title out of this team. Their advantage over the league comes in their 3-8 players moreso than their top 2. That advantage will be harder to maintain financially past next year unless guys agree to major pay cuts (which would be a Warriors thing to do).

If they run through the league and the playoffs again next year (which isn't a given if Chris goes to the Spurs for a low enough number to keep the roster somewhat intact) then Lebron will opt out, take a pay cut and upgrade from Love as the Cavs third best player (or go somewhere else).

So how does the rest of the league react to this postseason?

I don't know, GM LeBron built a pretty filthy team. The dubs are just silly with Durant.
