2016-2017 Wake Forest Sports Year Recap

It's the first time in school history that basketball, football, baseball, and men's soccer have all made the postseason in the same year. Add in second place individual women's golfer, runner up in men's soccer, top-ranked team basically all year for men's tennis, plus bowl win, regional host and advancing to supers and yeah it's certainly one of the best ever.

I don't really think it's "sad, if true" and yeah people will disproportionately focus on men's basketball and football (which is fair since those are the two major sports) but across the board this has been a great year for any school's athletic program across the board. Ranked 10th in the country in the Capital One Cup for men.

That player's lounge video celebration is inspirational for us working slogs on a Friday morning. Scroll down.

Should be mandatory viewing and running on a loop in our Athletics department, and Admissions and everywhere.

Awesome.

I have no idea how this year can be seen as anything but an immense positive for the program overall.

Top 10. Better than UF and Bama but worse than Denver and James Madison.

we had a solid year

we were not nationally ranked / relevant in either revenue sport, and we won no team national championships

in 2006-07 WF won the ACC in football while being nationally ranked most of the year, and reached the final 4 in men's soccer and field hockey, made the NCAA baseball tournament, made NCAA's in WXC, both golf, both tennis, scored points in both T&F - that year was better, for one

It has definitely been a great year. Disappointing that regular season success didn't translate to any championships.

Probably one of the best, but not the best. Especially if you weight by level of interest.

Would you rather have a Natty in soccer, baseball or tennis or have the men's basketball team advance to the round of 32 (beat K State and beat Cincy, but lose to UCLA)?

Year shows solid improvement in revenue sports and bball. That's a good thing.

When asking whether the year was "fantastic", one must ask what it would be considered at Carolina, State, Duke or really any other ACC institutions. Otherwise, it's just "good for Wake".

The only difference between Wake and Duke is men's bball. Other than that, Duke is Wake Forest.

A comprehensive look and analysis of what could be argued is the best year in Wake Forest sports history.

Thanks for taking the time to put all that together. It's an interesting way to compare previous years across a variety of sports.

If you like stats and computer rankings, I've found the Massey Ratings to be interesting. They calculate team strength in 10 college sports and then compile those rankings to generate an overall ranking for an athletic department. Wake participates in 9 of those 10 sports (no softball) and this year Wake is ranked #22 overall. The rankings pass the "eye test" as there is not a program like James Madison in the top 50 that is elevated because of competing in FCS football, for example. The rankings can be found here http://masseyratings.com/college.php

I've been away from the boards for a while, but seeing this article on Facebook was enough to bring me back.

"There were records broken, titles won, and memories archived, but above all there was a sense of excitement around Demon Deacon athletics that tasted more than refreshing compared to recent years. The enthusiasm was well deserved too; few years in school history have yielded such positive results across the board, but particularly with the university’s flagship varsity programs. If it seemed like you had a lot more to cheer about over the last twelve months as a Deacon fan it’s because, well, there WAS a lot more to root, smile, and clap for."

Holy hell, this is as tone deaf as Wellman during the lowest of lows of the [name redacted] era. What is this enthusiasm you speak of? The alumni I know from the late 90's to early 00's have almost none. The enthusiasm seems limited to a tiny subset of even the most loyal Wake fans, many of an age that never experienced any real success or enthusiasm during their time at Wake. You can analyze the "numbers" all you want in some made up formula, but the empty seats at the games I attended this past year don't lie. An unweighted formula that gives more points to multiple soccer seasons without a Championship than football's Orange Bowl season is flawed from the start. I was one of the few Wake fans there for the soccer Championship, but you simply can't compare the two with regards to the success of our athletics program overall. The Orange bowl year was FAR FAR FAR more important to our fanbase and our athletics program than any year of soccer ever could be.

I don't think he said anywhere in that article that the Orange Bowl wasn't more important than any year of soccer.

Depends on how you look at it.

If you look at all the sports then it would be considered pretty damn good for anybody, particularly on the men's side, as we are currently ranked in the top 10 of D1 schools for men's sports.

Yet another questionable metric. Besides, we're as many points behind Denver in 4th place than we are ahead of 50th place.
