Wake Most Likely to Upset

big game != upset win

Agreed?

No I don't think a big game always equals an upset. I think a big game can be a game that has to be considered an almost must win against any opponent that is good enought to beat you. I think App is certainly good enough to beat us, but we are and should be favored. It's a big game, but certainly not in the sense the FSU or Louisville game will be big games. We have a lot more to lose Saturday than we have to gain, that's makes it big I think.

Clawson should get some national coach of the year consideration if that's the case. Would love to see it! Still, App is an important game, because if we don't beat App I don't see us doing what you're saying, so the point still stands.

Clawson would hands down be the coach of the year if this happened. Wake would be 10-2 with three or four wins against top 25 teams.

I was with you until this.

Losing to App St will tank our momentum, and publicly kinda reaffirm our national LOWF personna. Winning at App St keeping the momentum going, will be our best win this season so far even though it's not a "top 25" win. As far as upsets, forget Clemson. Anybody who thinks that didn't watch them the last 2 weeks and has never been to Death Valley for a game. We'll have to see whether NC State or Louisville would even be considered a big upset when we play them since neither has looked great so far. Winning at ND might be just too much to ask of a young team. FSU would be my pick simply because their offense isn't dynamic and lacks leadership. We might be able to take advantage of that at home to beat a more talented team.

You don't think the negatives of a loss makes it pretty big that we don't let that happen?

I think saying something like you said is akin to saying a basketball game vs UNCG is a bigger game than a basketball game vs NC State because "we have more to lose" by losing to UNCG than we "have to gain" by beating NC State.

It's a nonsensical argument, in my opinion. In no way, shape, or form is a game vs App State a bigger game than a game vs FSU, L'Ville, Duke, Clemson, or any other ACC opponent.

Getting pleasure beating Appalachian is like enjoying a root canal because half your face is throbbing. Playing them helps their program to a degree. I wound not schedule them or Charlotte ever. The only reason we do it is the money game when they come to Winston. The only fan base that rivals their dog shit behavior in our house are VT goobers. Some of us have these vivid memories.

I agree with you re: Charlotte.

Charlotte isn't even remotely a threat. I say schedule them up now. They just got beat by NC A&T this week (who is decent). Charlotte's a bottom five FBS team in the nation if not the single worst team. Wake would be favored by 25+ this year.

ETA: Sagarin has Wake favored by 35 on a neutral field.

By that standard, every game we play against a team we expect to beat is a "big game". Was the Presby game a big game?

I haven't read this whole thread, but agree with anyone that suggested Louisville. I think we've got their number this year.

Wut? You all are crazy. There is literally no upside to this game. We either lose to a sunbelt team or beat a sunbelt team.

One way you can look at it is preparation for away games with hostile crowds. If we can go in there, calmly execute our game plan and win, we have some experience to draw from that can be used down the road. Other than that, WF should not schedule them.

So we should prepare for away games with hostile crowds by playing away games with hostile crowds ? That's like preparing for cold weather by walking out in the cold weather.

No upside, shit school with an expectation we should win the game. As a P5 school plenty of other schools to choose from that don't have regional history.

I would rather play a name brand SEC/B1G school that's of equivalent talent to App than App. Losing to App would look a lot worse than losing to Mizzou/Nebraska (who are probably better than App but would gain more from winning). Especially for the bowl pockets and their #eyetest

Clem's son fans aren't the best behaved and fill out the BB&T visitor side as well.

Agreed. I kind of liked them better during the Bowden years. :) They are riding too high right now. Really wish we could smack them back down. Dabo has them rolling.

I'd be surprised if App were an underdog on a neutral site against Missouri.
