New coaching search thread

Yeah, I've heard a few folks talking up Miller and Kelsey's "years" of experience as a HC. I just see a red flag that they are still at the same crappy school after all this time.

Keatt's resume was much better IMO.

I'm less concerned about Miller not leaving UNCG than I am about Kelsey staying at Winthrop.

There are reasons for Miller to stay in NC... Family, UNC, a tight friendship w/ donaldross, etc. His conference is also not as bad as the Big South.

Kelsey could have taken UMass and was clearly hoping to get the Xavier job. But he's stayed at Winthrop and been pretty good, but not "jump off the page" good... I think you need more than that to move from there to the ACC.

This is where i am. If true that Miller is out (and the reasons make sense honestly) then it feels like:

Matta

Forbes

Kelsey as backup (I can’t imagine he would say “no” - i bet he’s been working on his pitch for Wake for years now, just waiting for DFL to get canned).

I really like Matta and prefer him to Beilien. And as i read 234293492 pages ago it would be full circle for him to erase the juju from Butler/OCC

One of my favorite parts of the false Wes Miller narrative that DR created out of thin air is that there are legions of UNC fans out there that have already recognized his future greatness. I know a lot more serious UNC basketball fans than I’d like to and I’ve never heard any of them mention Wes Miller in any context, much less as the future HC of one of the top couple programs in all of college basketball.

I'm certain I missed it in this thread, so apologies if it's already covered, but what are the thoughts around Matta's health going forward? He had back issues at OSU? Back and leg/foot issues?

I'm going to have to back up dr here. I've heard a number of UNC fans talk about Miller as a potential future head coach, and the prevailing (maybe an overstatement, but consistent) talk around UNC-G is that Miller is wanting to stay at UNC-G to build it into a program where stepping up into the UNC job makes sense (with significant investment from the Miller family). I think Wake hiring Forbes will help Miller in that process.

A lot of this may come from the fact that we're in GSO and in closer proximity to UNC fans that have access to watching Miller coach and here more about UNCG that others might.

Miller wouldn't turn down our job. If he "took his name out of consideration" it's because he wasn't going to be a finalist.

Thinking Wes Miller declined an ACC job is craziness.

What’s really going to be interesting is when Wes takes Clemson, GT, or BC in the next couple years. If he truly isn’t a candidate here at this point, I kind of hope he does so that we can see how it turns out. How long can he possibly hang out in GSO waiting to gamble once Roy retires?

This times 1000. I live in CH and happen to know some Carolina insiders pretty well (people within the program). When Miller is referenced, its always in the context of replacing whoever replaces Roy with the caveat that he needs to go someplace bigger than UNC-G first.

Kelsey turned down the job because he doesn't want to move to a small town.

These views are not entirely inconsistent. If I was predicting, I would say Wes does go somewhere else before taking the UNC job. But I also think if college hoops goal posts continue to move, he could go right from UNCG. The concept that Northern Kentucky is a stepping stone to UNC because it’s in the Horizon League and UNCG is in the So Con is fading fast. Who knows what those dynamics look like in 3-4 years.

Every prospect mentioned has warts of some kind....

Sounds like Matta has had some serious health problems ( a botched surgery leaving a permanent impaired foot ?). Never knew he’s only 55....he looks much older.

Forbes, Kelsey and Miller seam out for rather obvious reasons.

Beilein’s only apparent knock is age (67). Like Matta, Beilein doesn’t look his age only he looks more like late 50’s than 67.

Wouldn’t mind Beilein one bit but I’m guessing Currie’s choice hasn’t been mentioned here as yet or by Conor.

Sure. But he would have to prove himself a lot more than he has so far at UNC-G, no disrespect to him. He's just not a serious UNC candidate for at least the next 7-10 years and maybe not ever depending on how he fares in Greensboro andat his next stop.

55. Too old.

Not sure if serious, but our next coach will be here 7-10 years. Maybe 10-12. Then move on or retire.

I saw someone say Wes would be here 30 years. LOL. How many coaches have we had for 12 years or longer in MBB?

Forbes for 7-10 is a good get.

Skip preferred elite athletes, and Wes wasn't one. This is probably the same reason Skip passed on Curry, when he had a chance to sign him. In addition, with Wes, Skip feared pressure to play him because of his family's influence with Wake, and he didn't want that either. Similarly, Skip did not want Len Chappell's son due to lack of athleticism and possible outside pressure based on the kid being the son of a Wake legend.

Who is Curry? (as in Seth/Steph?)

Somewhere in the last couple of days, someone said it wasn't Prosser but wellman that blocked Wes.. That could be just a blame Wellman for everything, which i'm ok with.

I have a hard time believing Wes turned Wake down, especially because he would need a bigger job before UNC would be interested in him. It's possible he does not want to coach at another ACC school, but that's a huge risk. He may never end up at UNC and it is highly unlikely the Heels hire him straight out of UNCG.

With all of that said, I would be very happy if Wake hires Matta, and it is good to hear, allegedly, that there is mutual interest. Matta would bring instant credibility to the program, and, health permitting, he would bring Wake back into the national conversation almost immediately, while a Forbes/Kelsey hire would take years to pan out. Unlike Keatts' arrival at NC State, whoever we hire will be coming into a program that's decimated with no big recruits coming.

Yes, it's referring to Steph Curry.

Steph Curry is one of those exceptions that certain Wake fans have used over the years to defend [Redacted]/Manning's recruiting. It's similar to the "but what was Coach K's record when he was hired" argument. I can only assume that these people are the ones who keep the lottery in business. You just never know!!!!

I don't recall Wake being involved at all with Steph, but maybe I'm blocking that out of my memory. The list of offers on his 247 profile indicates that no one else expected him to be a diamond in the rough either.
