Totally Unofficial 2019/2020 Premier League Thread (NWT)

Holland did it right. Scrap the season.

Its lame AF, but it honestly makes the most sense.

You could maybe do a bigger league, just skip the FA and/or League Cup next year.

I think it probably makes most sense to scrap/call the rest of this year, too, unless they think they can reasonably finish it during the time the Euros were going to be. But it'd have to be closed doors no fans, right? Lame. Gotta be safe. I don't know, the whole thing is pretty lame.

Anyway, happy Liverpool-Barcelona 2nd leg 4-0 day everyone!

Corner taken quickly...Origiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!

Marcotti makes a good point that it could be a tough sell to split the PL revenue 22 ways as opposed to 20 in an expanded league next season, and that the PL is basically 20 separate entities so getting consensus could be a struggle. But hopefully at the end of the day what is the greatest good will prevail

I know you all are just aching to watch a little of the soccer.

I have helped you out! I got your backs. It's cool, it's cool, it's out of the kindness of my own heart, no thanks necessary.

Bundesliga starts back up in 9 days, albeit in empty stadiums. France, Belgium and Netherlands have cancelled their seasons.

Sounds like League Two and One will learn today they’re scrapping the season

I'd be surprised if the PL Restart happens, UK is in the same place we are right now. And I can't imagine sporting events taking place in either country before August. It is the price we pay for having airhead wannabe fascists as our head executives.

More just than relegating teams on current standings.

The obvious answer is to just null and void the season.

It really sucks for Liverpool, because OF COURSE they would have won it, but you cannot reward them and then NOT relegate those in the bottom 3 spots at the same time. And you cannot relegate those in the bottom 3 spots because they could have, quite possibly, escaped and stayed up.

It really sucks, but its a sucky situation all around and sports being disrupted is probably #274,582 (and counting) of things that have sucked about Covid-19.
I joked back in March about shutting it all down but I never in a million years thought we would be here entering the middle of May still without a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel.

What is this colossal downside you anticipate from a 23 team Prem?

Don't even have to bring up 3, just bring up West Brom and Leeds. Split the parachute payments between the four teams in the playoff positions. One of them would have gotten promoted, but they don't really know, so can't get too pissed.

Champs League spots still a problem, but I think you have to give Liverpool the title. You can't void everything after 29 games. Just create new rules. You could even do something silly like a coin flip between United and Sheff United or a one-match closed door playoff or something (I know Wolves is there, but Sheff has played a game less which if they won, they'd leap), and make City pay a fine to the league of what would have been their Champs League money and give to the loser of the coin flip. Pending City's appeal, of course, if there can even be a Champs League next year. Or just give it to Man United, which would be a bummer to Sheff United, but I bet the extra cash would soften the blow.

I don't know. But there are plenty of things they could do to be "fair," whatever that means. No point in trying to apply logic to fairness. This is a weird time, make it up as you go along.

This vote to get to 14 is going to be very tight. I guess so much depends on relegation plan/CL spots plan.

I am sorry, but I fail to grasp what power these guys have in global pandemics and what you may feel they did that has potentially negatively impacted or slowed the restart of sports.

Are you saying the shelter in place should have happened sooner? Or been more severe? Or the reopening of our economy should have been delayed?

yeah, feels like a lot of benchmarks they won't hit. i mean, the US didn't hit the benchmarks that our government gave us but now that same government doesn't care and says reopen so maybe the PL will do the same thing.

I think they make it ago and play. I'm not sure how scrapping the rest of the season helps the bottom 10 teams. You would think they would lose out on TV money if its scrapped and other than the top 6, they all rely on it too much.
Too much is at stake for the championship sides as well.

I can totally see the top players just opting out and not playing.
