Wake Forest 2023 baseball season thread (Deacs end historic season with extra inning loss to LSU: Final record 54-12 and top 4 finish nationally)

Maryland must think they passed off somebody. Win the B1G regular season. Win the B1G tournament.

Reward: 2 seed at the overall number 1 seed.

Keener starting vs Lowder borders on suicide. You absolutely have to win game #1.

What better way to do that than start one of the best pitchers in the nation vs one that…..?

Crazy thinking

We are playing the worst RPI team in the tourney. You just don’t waste Rhett there when the highest leverage game is game 2.

Now I agree that it takes some balls not to go Hartle there, but if we do what we’ve done all year we will be set up perfectly. Bats need to make it a non-issue in the first 3 innings.

yes, I plan on kicking off early and having a few tasty beverages while watching on Friday bc if I wait to get off work at a normal time then I will miss the fireworks. It should be over by the 4th.

You have to have two wins against top 30ish teams this weekend and you want to use Lowder up against a team with no Q1 or Q2 wins all year?

I don’t have great stats splits. It feels to me like the best way to limit the damage against WF’s lineup is to throw a decent LHP to neutralize Hawke, Corona and to a lesser extent Kurtz. (Kurtz gets his against everyone, but feels like all three are better against RHP)

GMU apparently has a decent LHP, so this will be interesting.

Of course this means we need Wilken to punish them for throwing a LHP out there.

And I absolutely think Lowder should go in game 2, just feels like the dynamic will be interesting.

I’m not aware of a current site tracking lefty/righty splits for college players.

we have somewhere between two and sixteen games left this season. Let's go 3-0 this weekend.

Actually no diff. if lose game 1 or 2 as same path if you lose either so winning both of the first 2 are huge to avoid losers bracket and the extra game. So as others have said pitching Rhett game 2 is a no brainer as 1 and 2 are equally important and you know the game 2 opponent will be a much tougher out, so you go with Rhett on that one. The real debate is whether you play it safe and go with Hartle in game 1 and save Keener/Sullivan for games 3 and after. George Mason @ 176 RPI is pretty bad and we played 9 games against 7 teams with lower RPIs and won those 117-16 with only close one being a 6-0 win vs. Binghamton. Rest of our games were against top 100 RPI except for UNC-G with a 140 RPI and we won that one 20-2. only tough team on their schedule appears to be ECU and they got swept easily by them. So does feel a Keener start in game 1 makes sense as should be easy W and great way to get Keener back to his A game which we need for long term.
