WFU Hoops: '23-'24 Roster Construction Thread: +Miller, Sallis, Reid, & Canka

I remember that Allen Bristow story....He was later quoted as saying Tellem thinks his client is the greatest thing since sliced bread so my friends and I called Kendall Gill Sliced Bread from then on.

Bobi should have paid for Ari Gold, instead he went with Josh Weinstein.

‘So, Bobi, I'm having a little bash at my place in Malibu this Saturday. It's gonna be off the hook. The only girls in this town who won't be there are the ugly ones.’

So are we all agreeing that Bobi signs an NIL agent deal with this dude who is trying to create a pipeline from the Australian NBL to the NBA. According to coach, Bobi wanted to test the NBA waters, but ultimately wanted to come back if he didn't get a 1st rd grade. When all the mocks at the end of the year didn't have Bobi getting drafted at all, this smuck calls his buddy in Australia to write a few puff pieces hyping Bobi as a 1st rounder to basically turn Bobi's (and his mothers) head away from coming back to Wake. Then shut out Wake coaches from even speaking to Bobi, and gets him to sign a pro deal in the NBL. I would assume the smuck gets a nice kickback from the NBL, and probably gets a nicer cut from Bobi on the pro deal than any NIL deals available (since hes from Sweden). And now this smuck has burned numerous bridges, in the NBA and NCAA. I think coach stated that the NBL has had 4 players drafted in the 1st rd compared to 60 from the ACC in a certain amount of time. Last 10 years or something?

I wonder how much vetting went on from Wake concerning NIL agents. Especially in this case, since Bobi is an international student. If they didn't have a thorough process, I am sure they do now. Just a rough situation for everyone, except the smuck. {taking off the tin hat now}
Someone could probably line up the dates/details, but my recollection is Vecenie was the only one that had him with a first round grade and had been hyping him up, had him the highest he ever had him in the last mock before he announced he wasn’t coming back, and then dropped him from the first round immediately after the deadline to withdraw?

If that does line up, it certainly starts to look like he was in cahoots.

Counterpoint.

Bobi Klintman ends up in Australia. POS agent gets paid. Bobi Klintman gets paid. The minimum salary is $69,748. The five lowest paid players must receive combined salaries of $655,295, so Bobi could earn more than a minimum salary.

During this entire process, Bobi Klintman never made a call to Steve Forbes or the coaching staff for advice or direction. He always maintained it was NBA first round or Wake Forest. Mom did not discuss the matter with Forbes.

The best course I ever took at Wake Forest was History of the South by David Smiley. A core concept of that course was economic determinism. If you want to know the real story, follow the money.

Glad Forbe's pulled back the curtain. He did so after consultation with other coaches and people he trusts. He had the chops to provide a specific example of the problems plaguing college sports that the NCAA has refused to address. The coaching fraternity has made general complaints about a host of issues, but specific examples are a more compelling argument. Combine Forbes commentary with the Clawson's statement that "if there is no enforcement of the NCAA rules, just get rid of the rules." Looks like leadership in the coaching fraternity to me.

Proud they are Deacs.

I wish Bobi Klintman all the best.

But you don't have a coach make those comments the way that Forbes did if they didn't feel like they got played, too. That's my only point. They presumably vetted the agent and said that he was okay. And then they got played.

It sucks across the board, but especially sucks for Bobi whose career got (hopefully, temporarily) derailed by a guy looking out for himself instead of his client.
I believe what Forbes said happened, happened. In regards to the vetting process.

Are you questioning his integrity?

Thought Klintman was in the “Next Stars” program paid by the NBL instead of the team and doesn’t count against their roster or cap? $100k max?

Maybe he has something else worked out with that incredible agent of his…

Not sure how much "vetting" can be done on NIL agents, particularly after they get hired. There are no requirements, standards or criteria for such. This guy was part of a known sports representation agency.

I love that Steve went public with this. Most of this stuff just stays under the covers-- part of the business. But NIL is a whole new animal, and a new way for shifty agents to force their way into the lives of kids. Sounds like the agent took advantage of Bobi's naivete. Shit like this needs to be called out, and especially if you're going to poke a bear like Forbes. Fuck with his livelihood, and he'll fuck with yours.

Man, I’m so proud to have Coach Forbes leading our bball program. He has earned a tremendous amount of goodwill from me by his behaviors off the court and I think our success on the court is imminent. I hope he’s here a long time.

While Klintmann is clearly an amazingly gifted athlete with his measurables as well as great athleticism one of his weaknesses imho is he played soft. Not sure a pro league coach is going to do the coddling/encouraging a Forbes would do for the young man so afraid this doesn’t end well for Bobi as soon as he hits a tough patch I could see him folding and not developing as he would under Forbes.

What about Klintmann's potential? That alone makes him a first rounder.

The mom could have done better work in this case. This kid isn't NBA bound any longer.

And Forbes rocks, love him.

Mom is an ocean away living in another country. I doubt she has any experience with US basketball agents. She is probably more naive than Bobi.

I know there is internet connection options. However, in some situations, they are not a good substitute for in person contact. Subtle body language may not be picked up on a video call because you can't see the whole person.

Maybe mom was told WFU coaches were OK with the agent. Lots of possibilities that mom didn't have complete correct info about what was going down. Or didn't want to hear.
