WF Baseball Off-season Thread

Dave Bush did it. A notable Wake exception. He did throw more innings than Minacci, but he was not a long guy.

I think it's more because of the overlap of guys who can viably be a starter in the majors yet weren't starters in college is tiny, but I think we're the exception with our pitching depth. Sounded like Minacci was in the running for a weekend spot each of the past two seasons but got beat out by guys who were better prospects. Unless you get a team trying to fast track him, I suspect he'll get a shot to start and try to develop a third pitch. At least some of the experts seem to think he has the frame, athleticism and mechanics to be a starter.

it does kinda suck that i just assume we won't ever hear from skenes again now that he's in the pirates system

The way the Reds see Lowder.

how about this quote:

"The Reds added to their pitching depth with the No. 38 overall pick in the draft, taking LSU starting pitcher Ty Floyd. Like Lowder, Floyd had success pitching for a blueblood program and impressed in the postseason."

Somebody can draft him and try to stretch him into a starter ... but if you haven't been a starter or even a long guy in 3 years of college, it's pretty much cemented that you're a reliever.
i think what changes that thought process is quality starters are really only needed to go 5 innings now. not that much to stretch out

Rays draft LSU's Tre Morgan. Was very impressed by him in the CWS. Rays know what they are doing. FWIW, the Rays also have Bobby Seymour at 1B in their system and he has played well in the Rays system.

They don't F around in the MLB draft. Ten years ago, when the draft was 50 rounds, MLB would offer up the live audio, and it was crazy how quickly the picks come in. If you aren't ready, you lose your spot.

Baseball’s draft can go so quickly because the teams aren’t drafting for need literally at all. They have big boards ranking the available players and just go down the list, with the only consideration being the signing bonus demands.

Glad to have a reason to root for Morgan. He was part of a soul crushing play in Wake postseason history but it was a legitimately great play, not banking in a 3-pointer or some awful lucky play.

So who do we think goes next, Hawke or Minacci?
