Dave Clawson Credibility Watch

Kern new QB. He's not Dan Marino but how Clawson AND our QB coach, Ruggiero, thought Griffis is better...that is very concerning.
Kern has always looked better including in the spring game. Only thing I can think of is the staff thought they'd have 3 more years with Mitch versus 1 more with Kern.

If Kern had QB1 reps from the beginning we easily make a bowl. Then you have him for another year in order to see if the freshman QB has the it factor or you go portaling.

Just hope Kern doesn't move on after getting passed over initially

Interesting discussions. A couple of thoughts.

Any comparisions on success being measured by inclusion in a bowl game and a team going to the Dance are ridiculous. There are 133 D1 football programs competing for 82 bowl berths. There are 362 D1 basketball teams competing for 68 invites to the Dance. Adding the NIT as a reward makes it 100 out of 362. NO comparision.

At midseason I suggested that if Clawson continued to start Mitch Griffis at QB and the Deacs continued to lose, Clawson would begin to feel the heat. He did and his suitability as the head coach at WFU is being questioned. Another 4-8, 1-7 finish in 2024 and the fire is visible. I like Dave Clawson. He is a good match with Wake Forest. His defined success over the past seven years has earned him the opportunity to return Wake to a wining football team. He would be best served to do so next year.

Clawson was given a long-term contract extension in 2021 so that he could finish his coaching career at Wake. Clawson is here to stay and Wake is committed to Clawson and football program.

Wake's developmental strategy has to be modified to better adapt to recruiting players out of the portal.

The team generally did not look like a well coached team this year and that has to change. Will Clawson make any changes to the coaching staff?

Comparing the entire potential fields is an apples to oranges comparison because mid major and low major conferences get autobids. Among P5 conferences, the numbers aren’t far off. Here are the number of teams each conference got into the NCAA and NIT vs. bowls last season.

ACC - 7/9 (UNC declined an NIT bid)
Big 12 - 8/9
Big Ten - 7/9
Pac-12 - 7/9
SEC - 10/12

It’s close enough that you can say a major conference NIT bubble team is comparable to a P5 6-6 bowl team.

i'm not reading the last 10 pages of this that i missed, but if kern was really the answer wouldn't he have beaten a shitty syracuse team that was without a coach

Because he can’t play defense.

Also Kern is not the answer, he’s just better than the other guy who started 9 games.

I would be okay with that. With our luck he would have a breakout game and throw 5 TD's and rush for another 2. But I dont see that happening either
Yeah, that will be hard for him to do if he just continues to stand there and not move, then get crushed.

Unreal.

So this is something I found interesting, and since the season thread is dead, maybe I can put it here. Here are the QB stats from our 3 QBs this season.

Passing
RkPlayerGCmpAttPctYdsY/AAY/ATDIntRate
1Mitch Griffis912420759.915537.56.997130.5
2Michael Kern4579262.06477.06.942131.0
3Santino Marucci3122157.11517.23.912114

I will also add that Griffis was sacked 35 times for -202 yards, Kern 11 times for -61 yards and Tino 3 times for -13 yards.

Much closer than you would have thought. Now, obviously, the bodies of work are not close in size, and the opponents differed, but still pretty close across the board.

he has one more year of eligibility, but he got his undergrad in May '22 and completes his graduate degree this fall

Thanks! He walked with the seniors at the NC State game and is listed as a senior, but I thought he had an extra year. I think he'd be very solid with a spring of QB1 reps and QB1 reps in practice through the year.

I think Kern would be serviceable as a QB1 for sure, especially if it's a year to get Hecklinski up to speed.

That being said - I want to see us in the portal for a QB1.

Obviously not the end all be all, but Kern had one of the higher PFF and QBR ratings among QBs last week. He had a very good game, just the defense for whatever reason (probably fatigue and don't blame them) let Syracuse's quarterback have what probably will wind up being a career night for him.
