FUCK YOU, RON WELLMAN

No, but he kept him here and happy in the mid-90's, when there were plenty of other well financed and major schools that would have loved to have him after the 1995-1997 seasons.

Weird argument, considering that post 1996-97 Odom gave us a few NIT appearances and getting Butlerized. Seeing as we’re looking through the retrospectoscope, seems like Wake might have missed out by not letting him leave after the 1996-97 season.

Oh Heavens Yes!

Says it all really.

The whisper campaign against Dino was bullshit. [Redacted] was just incompetent. Dino and the players didn't deserve the stray bullets.
Dino has spent the past two years dealing with the US Attorneys and FBI over the Louisville fiasco. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

So, you would have been okay with GDO leaving at that point? Not sure who else we could've got at that time. I think Rick Pitino left Kentucky in 97, but see said reference above in that regards.

I didn’t say that. I’m saying that I think there’s an inconsistency in giving Wellman credit for keeping Odom around after ‘97 and not making Wellman own the mediocrity we experienced in Odom’s last 4 years. I agree that Odom deserved to stay at that point, but an argument can be made it was the wrong decision. I’d say that’s a net neutral to Wellman’s legacy and therefore shouldn’t be referenced when trying to point out any positive impact he had on Wake.

It’s been a decade and the guy was fired and dragged through the coals and we still have nothing substantial on him. Give it up. You’re the first one on here defending coaches and ADs, but you’re after this guy who’s been unproblematic to Wake since taking over for his dead best friend, doing better than any coach since and being shitcanned with his reputation tarnished as a result of Wellman thinking he had some master plan that was obviously demented. Mack looks a lot worse than Dino in the Lville thing and no one’s busy trashing him.

I realize this isn't the popular thing to say here, but the man spent over 25 years here to this University, and while Gene Hooks was by all means a great man and wonderful representative of the university, some of the facilities issues were in dire straits and in need of improvement by the late 80's. You like those improvements to Groves Stadium? There was some work that went into play behind the scenes to get this funded.

You can disagree with some of the latter issues down the road, but he also gave us GDO (along with Childress, Duncan, and 2 ACC titles), Jim Grobe (2006 ACC Football Championship), Skip Prosser, and Dave Clawson. Pretty sure we've got a Soccer Championship along with a few great Baseball teams as well (ACC champs 1998 - 2001). I'm just as frustrated as everyone else over the past 15 years or so, but to blame everything on the prior AD for what's currently going on is ridiculous.
Lot of good points in this post, I’d just like to contribute “Go fuck yourself Ron Wellman” as a rejoinder.

People keep talking about this whisper campaign led by Wellman, yet years later we still have no evidence Wellman did that. You would think we would have heard from athletic department employees by now if there truly was a campaign led by the top. That hasn’t happened, has it? At this point, that seems exceptionally unlikely with no evidence. Maybe people just didn’t like Dino and made their own commentary based on that. Even Dino jock sniffer DemanDeac admitted at the time that many in the athletic department wouldn’t be sad to see him go.

It’s possible to think Wellman shit the bed and sucked but also realize people could independently dislike Dino and want him out.

Wellman literally said that the players didn't know how to put on their socks right. That's why he had to hire [Redacted] to teach footware and change the culture, even though all of the players stayed the same.

I hope that isn’t in response to me because public comments by Wellman would be the exact opposite of his waging a whisper campaign.

the whisper campaign started after people began scratching their heads about why the fuck we hired [Redacted] when Dino was 61-31 or whatever it was even though all of his teams collapsed in march

Most people could at least see the reasoning for moving on from Dino at the time, but it didn’t get weird until we realized our replacement was a lemon

I remember my dad was still living at the time Wellman fired Dino. I called him and said, "Wow, Wellman is really serious about things if he fired a guy who just went to the NCAAT. Can't wait to see the ringer he has coming in....."

Welp!! And Elmer Fudd shows up!

Yup. Wellman isn’t the reason Bob McCreary decided to support Wake football. Wellman didn’t spark Shah’s interest in Wake basketball. I’m not sure why people give him so much credit for other people contributions. It’s bullshit and disrespectful for the people who actually made those facilities possible. I’m not saying an AD can’t instill confidence and excitement in a fanbase that leads to capital improvements but I dont believe he was uniquely skilled at that. The people who actually funded those projects deserve the credit.

Correct, but he extended GDO on at least two separate contracts in the 90's if I recall correctly. GDO was one of the final Gene Hooks hires. We started winning and consistently competing with the blue bloods again around 92-93 in Men's Basketball.
What happened recruiting wise in 93-94?

Once that dude left and went on to become a top 10 basketball player of all time, we were NIT.

How about we make this the last post and let this thread disappear? Having to see the name Wellman on the first page of the Wake Forest Sports forum is never a good thing. Never.
No fuck that - State is about to go to the S16 where we've been precisely once (!!!) since i went to wake in the fucking mid-90s. Go fuck yourself Ron.

man i was looking at the wikipedia page - the last time we beat someone more than a seed line above us (so skipping 8/9 or 4/5 games, i.e. what State did last night): 1984. Depaul game. 40 fucking years ago.
