Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

The more money football programs make, the closer we are to College Presidents igniting to take back their brands from football coaches and using it to build Biology Buildings. This scene has been quite remarkable to watch. Who owns the brand? The University or the Athletic Dept. A reckoning is coming because colleges are dying.

The TV executive hogs just don't get it. Do they really think people are going to watch Alabama v Ohio State when even an inkling of a dream your college could get there is extinguished? Raking leaves in the fall will beat that viewership.

WhoTF wants Clemson? Tiny market the SEC already has and a deteriorating football program. UNC I definitely get. And I slightly get wanting a piece of the large VA market, though neither UVA nor VT have appetizing football programs. Though maybe, just maybe, the B1G and SEC are eying that new football and hoops power JMU instead.

I don't think it's so much about markets as is about streaming numbers now. So with Clemson you get half the state in a growing, prosperous state....

I won’t miss Howard’s Rock. I won’t miss two dollar bills. I won’t miss the ‘1/2’ mascot (thought it would be funny to have a 1/2 deac who is like 35). I won’t miss running down a little hill or the replica little hill they made indoors. I won’t miss Dabo. I wish them an eternity of driving through corn after Clemsoning. May it bring them great joy and prosperity.

Could probably pay half the salary of their volleyball coach if they didn’t drive the FB team around the stadium for home games.

I hear ya but this is sad. I believe we are Clemson’s 2nd or 3rd most played opponent in their history.

can someone give a brief explanation why this particular move is being treated as the death knell as opposed to all the other attempted moves over the last few years?

The ACC isn’t worth shit if FSU and Clemson find a way out and it’s just a matter of time until they do.

Clemson was never going to sue the ACC until this was a done deal. Unlike FSU, they are us. The only reason for the lawsuit is now to save money. They are leaving no matter what. They never would have filed suit if they were not. It's also clear they have other co-conspirators. All this is now is the lesser knowns trying to get paid -- as we should. We are not Oregon State trying to cash in on still being the Pac 12 with all the various contracts.

Like the Big East before and the Southern Conference in 1953, the leftovers will of course keep the name. But as of today, the ACC is no more. Each school will now scramble to find a home. The UNC, Duke, and UVAs bring things to the table. Unlike in 1953, we don't have Dick Hemric. We chose not to prioritize basketball and now we have nothing to offer. It hurts to say it but we no longer even offer much academically. Our US News ranking is what it is. Our alumni giving is what it is. We are now on par with High Point and James Madison -- and we are about to be in their conference as well -- probably something called the ACC.

Not a banner beginning to Wente’s presidency even if she’s to blame for little to none of it.

Strip out the usual "scoreboard of life" silliness and I agree with the rest of this.

All of the non-magnificent 7 were preparing for this by adding Stanford/Cal/SMU. So, even if the ACC loses all 7 (which is doubtful), it’s still a 10 team conference. Will be interesting to see what UNC does. They have options, but was thinking at the ACCT this past week, does UNC really want to leave the ACC to play in the Big 22 tournament in Minneapolis? Maybe football rules to the point that basketball doesn’t matter at all, and I guess the additional revenue makes it worth playing Nebraska and Washington, but at the end of the day UNC is just another school in the Big 10 or SEC.

A consolation prize to all of this will be watching UNC turn into a 5 to 6 win football team at best every year.
