If someone calls me when I have a mouthful of sandwich, I don't answer.

If they stop by, I talk with my mouthful of sandwich to let them know I'll follow up when I have a minute.

Why? If you want stuff like a scheduled lunch and 8-5 hours then get a union job or an hourly gig.
eh, salaried jobs are about getting the results you were hired to get while also working amicably with coworkers when necessary, and that includes things like respecting one another's time

Salary comes from my budget and my P&L. If someone is so concerned about getting their lunch why did they even respond to the message ir take the call to begin with?
here's how this might go in my house.. i go upstairs to make some lunch after a morning of planning meetings/etc, my phone pings, it's a DM on slack from someone asking if I have 5 minutes to discuss something they weren't sure about from previous meetings, "sorry i'm grabbing lunch and stepped away from my computer, happy to hop on a call with you in half an hour or throw something else on my calendar if that doesn't work for you"

this is the part i don't get... just don't answer if you can't talk
Well if it's my boss calling me then I assume it's something urgent and time-sensitive, so I answer.

This is a take that doesn't work the same if you are lower ranking in a company.

clearly there wasn't just a call to someone, he was asking the fellow employee to get on a call and they let him know they were grabbing lunch

Why does the "why" matter if someone can't take a call? Whether it's lunch, they're wrapping something up on a project, or rubbing one out in spite of Obama's directives...

Windy I’m mostly in agreement with you - the people in question are all very well compensated, not hourly schlubs.

However you def don’t work nonstop as you have posted 30x today so far

is the expectation from your higher ups that you spend 12 hours nonstop on calls?

the expectation is get the job done in however much time it takes...if that involves 12 hours of calls so be it.

Obviously there is some hyperbole in my comments, but as a salaried employee you don't get "lunch breaks". get done what needs to be done...if you are out of the office and don't want to talk because you are having lunch just don't answer.

If you don't like that the employer doesn't respect your personal time in your mind then it's fine to find another job.

Some people care more about their physical and mental well-being than they do about their work.

I know that you aren't one of those people, but you shouldn't impose your standard for yourself regarding that onto everyone else.
Is it fair to say that some people get a lot of mental well being by being good and effective at their job? He can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Windy feels valuable to the world by being a good and hard worker, and the feeling of valuableness benefits his mental health.

I agree with the bolded, but not necessarily with the first part about the time it takes. in all the companies I've worked for, they've always been about you having the work life balance and can end your day at a normal time most days. of course some days do need to go long, but if the job requires 12 hour days constantly, the role needs to be reassessed.

a lot of it has to do with dealing with multiple timezones. A previous job the company HQ was in CA and one of our largest sales divisions was in Europe. So, that's usually how the calls end up being across so much time.

And don't kid yourself...i like it. I'm sure i could decline calls after 5PM on a regular basis if i wanted

Somehow I'm on the email list for Garmin, and I just got an email with the subject "The perfect gift for mom." I feel like you have to be a highly specific mom whereby a Garmin product would be the perfect Mother's Day gift for you.
