Now that the Season is Over - From a Long-Time Supporter

I don't believe for a second that Wellman didn't begin his research of potential successors until after firing Gaudio.

No question the hire wasn't a good one. But any AD not named Lee Fowler has a full list of potential candidates to take over, including doing the initial background research on each coach's record, general personality, and approximately how much it may take to lure that coach away from their current job. So when Dino was fired, a full list was almost assuredly in place.

My guess is that when he then started calling the people on said list, many weren't interested and many ended up being outside the financial constraints of our Athletic Department at the time (during the recession, while paying the football coach $2.9 million, paying the prior coach, and with all the renovations we were making to our athletic facilities). [Redacted] was likely in the top 5-10 candidates on his list and after a few quick phone calls he probably could ascertain that he was the one guy on the list who would be interested at the salary offered. That still doesn't eliminate the fact that it was a bad hire, but that's how you could get to that point that quickly while performing an exhaustive coaching search.

Frankly, that scenario is just as bad. If by some miracle Bzz was the only person Wellman called who was interested in coaching Wake Forest before Dino was even fired, a sane reaction would have been to keep Dino around, let him "suffer" through the next season (after all, according to the Bzzin fans, we KNEW we were going to be awful before Dino was fired), and then fire him after a bad season and see who you could find the next year.

And it still pisses me off that Wellman waited so long to fire Dino if he knew he was going to fire him a month or so previously; thereby allowing other programs searching for coaches to have a leg up in the process. At least a perceived leg up.

Wellman really threw up all over himself during this entire process. 2 straight years of throwing up all over yourself continuously. To be fair, there are other people that in society. They are called homeless drunks.

I've said this before...and I can't reveal my source...but Bzzz was the target prior to firing Dino. There was a list but many doubt Wellman really pursued anyone on this list in earnest. He wanted Bzzz from the beginning so in his mind it didn't matter that other coaches were being recruited by others.

You're the only person/poster I've heard that from. Do you have any proof that he did not pursue anyone else? How do you define "in earnest?"

I don't have the details on the subsequent search. I know the bigger names on the list and I know that Bzz was presented as 'the guy' most likely to get the job.

I wonder if that's as in the guy who is most likely to accept what we can pay him; will actually say yes; or that we're going to pursue the hardest. I had heard that he was fairly low on the list. I admit that I don't know many of the mitigating factors that would cause him to move up

Mitigating factor #1: Wellman lost his God damned mind.

That's it. That's the list.

"The person we hire may or may not have a national championship under his belt"

If he had a 1-man list consisting of Jeff [Redacted] when he said this... I think its safe to say that Ron Wellman has won the game of trolling.

Last year, I would have hotly debated you on that 7. This year, all I can think is "Oh heavens, yes"

No idea if there was a one man list, but some of the "insiders" around this time really thought we were getting Billy Donovan.

le sigh

I can say with 100% confidence that this is dead wrong.

I can say with 100% confidence in my source, that it is correct. I knew about all of this long before the boards knew. I had to bite my tongue for a week or so and then to watch the 'discovery' that Bzzz was the guy was as expected...denial and then mass panic.

Awfully convenient since you "can't name your source." Unless your source is Ron himself, it's doubtful at best.

Pretty much this with the exception of Jim Grobe making $2.9M per year.

The end result of the search sucked (the most important factor) but anyone who states there were no other candidates or it wasn't a real search is full of shit.

Do people honestly think Wellman was sitting on his ass up in Indianapolis that year at the Final Four before the Dino firing was official? No chance. He was making calls and "unofficial" contacts.

It's highly plausable that there was a search but Bzz was Wellman's guy all along.

I blame this entire debacle on southern values and Wellman's "Oh Heaven's Yes" attitude.

Fire both these fucknuts and bring in some one who has some balls.

Jim Grobe's annual compensation per Wake's 990 forms:
2009: $2,223,082
2008: $2,939,475
2007: $3,459,037
Avg: $2,873,864

Dino was fired because, in Wellman's words, he is a "greaseball WOP." Wellman--what kind of name is Wellman anyway, sounds vaguely Jewish--despised Dino for being a proud Italian American. He put the "kabash" on team spaghetti and meatballs night, and ordered Dino to remove an autographed picture of Robert Deniro from his office wall. BabyDeac75 can verify this if he dares. He complained that Dino wore too much cologne and always "reeked of garlic." If Dino's last name were Prosser, he'd still be here winning games.

In a nutshell, the entire demise of our basketball program is due to Dino's olive toned skin.
