2022-23 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Goodman just mentioned Forbes in connection with the Texas gig?? That would raise some eyebrows. Not sure how well that would go over since Terry has done so well stepping in

Am listening to Field of 68 and Goodman was talking about Texas. He said he knows they don’t want to hire Terrry full time but a deep run will force them to. If they don’t, said they will try Scott Drew & Kelvin Sampson who will say no. Maybe that goes back to Terry or could be someone like a Steve Forbes.
Funny to think of Coach parlaying the Wake job into Texas job w/o making a tournament.

As frustrated as Forbes has been with Wake now even getting snubbed by the lowly NIT, could see him entertaining any offers that come his way. :(

I can't imagine that Forbes would turn down the Texas job under any scenario.
They have the most AD resources of anyone in the country. Not sure any coach should turn that down.

If Forbes left and we got Richey or Kelsey, I would not be upset.

FWIW, seemed like Goodman was just throwing out names rather than using a source within the Texas athletic department that they had Forbes at the top of their list. I love Forbes, but Texas can almost hire any coach in the country; they hired Chris Beard after he took Texas Tech to NC final game. Forbes may be on the TX list, but would be shocked if he was the first name on that list.

That said, even though all coaches are nomads, Forbes has even greater nomadic existence than most as he had to rebuild his career after Bruce Pearl almost destroyed it. He has no ties to this region of the country or the ACC until he took this job. So, he is the first WF coach in football or basketball in decades that it would make sense if he viewed the WF job as just another rung in the ladder. Also, not to give DR cred, age is a factor; given the time it took Forbes to get to this level, he doesn't have the time to coach at WF for 10 years, and then go hunt for the biggest jobs in college basketball. Finally, he has cache' right now, but if WF missed on an NCAAT again next year, not sure how attractive his resume would be to other schools. IOW, think its fair to assume that Forbes and his agent constantly have an eye out for another job and another payday.

is there an NBA player from the 90s or 00s who has turned out to be a good college basketball coach?

Lots of them are NBA coaches. I guess Penny Hardaway is the best college coach so far?
I kinda like the Stoudamire hire. At least a lot more than them hiring Pastner the last go round. I'd like to see GT get back to being a top half of the ACC team. And it's getting tougher to compete with the SEC when they can hire coaches like Beard, Pearl and Oats.

33 coaches have been fired or retired.
9 in the six power conferences
7 spots have been filled
3 of the spots filled are power conference jobs: Ole Miss, GT, Cuse
6 open power conference jobs: Texas, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, G'town, St. Johns, Cal

Cal had one year of Jaylen Brown, in 2015-16, and with him earned a #4 seed in the NCAA tournament. They promptly lost to Hawaii, which is the only NCAA tournament win in Rainbow Warrior history. Since then, Cal:

Was a #1 seed in the NIT but got bounced in the first round by Bakersfield

now on a streak of 6 consecutive seasons outside of KP's top 100, with 3 of them, including this year, sub-200; combined PAC 12 record of 22-92; ran off first Wyking Jones and now Mark Fox

Maybe Jason Kidd will leave the Mavs to revive his school. Or Shareef Abdur-Rahim will leave the G league (then again, maybe not)

McNeese is trying to get in front of any NCAA sanction.

Twitter saying Cooley to Georgetown has some real legs... But not a done deal.
