For the first time in 34 days, the Deacs return to the court to play another school in a men's inter-collegiate basketball game. Taking baby steps after a long and brutal pause, the Deacs will play the D2 Catawba Indians before starting ACC play on Sunday at Georgia Tech.
There are no KP metrics on D2 Catawba. Here's what is known about the Indians:
- Catawba sits at 2-3 and is coming off a riveting 83-81 OT win over the Mars Hill Lions.
- Catawba has 4 D1 transfers on their roster:
Marcus Burwell -- FIU
Larry McLeod -- Arkansas State
Lloyd Hemming -- USC Upstate
Taqwain Drummond -- Coppin State
- Catawba plays high scoring games as they average 84 ppg, and have 6 players averaging double figures.
- Last time out, Catawba started (Catawba has some legit size):
6-4 G Terrence Whitfield (leading scorer 17 ppg; 43% from 3)
6-4 G Taqwain Drummond (missed first 3 games of the year)
6-6 G/F Larry McLeod (missed 2 games)
6-10 C/F Ben Bowen (leading rebounder 6 ppg; Bowen can also shoot the 3; he's 5 for 9 for the season)
6-7 F DJ Johnson (has not attempted a 3)
The Indians top 2 players off the bench are 6-3 G Carter Phillips (has started) and 6-5 G Caleb Robinson (foul prone). 6-6 G Ace Carter led Catawba in scoring in their first game, but has missed the last 3.
- Defense appears to be optional for the Indians as they have given up 78, 103, 93, 109 and 81 (93 ppg average).
- Forbes' pressure defense may give the Indians trouble as they average 16 TOs a game and surrendering 8 steals a game to their opponent (WF currently leads D1 in defensive steal percentage).
- Catawba has struggled from the line shooting 64% on the season.
- Catawba played an exhibition game against Wichita State two years ago and the game was competitive. The Shockers won 75-64.
Bottom line: Deacs will be rusty. Looking forward to seeing Ody back on the Court. Would expect a high scoring up and down game. FWIW, WF is the ACCs only unbeaten team (there are 19 unbeatens in D1 who have played at least one game); the Deacs OOC schedule has been... um... soft.. as our wins have come against #318 Longwood and #353 Delaware State. Those two teams are a combined 1-11. Expect that the Deacs will stay in the unbeaten class as the Deacs head into ACC play.
