Irish writes piece about Papa John Wellman; Daily Beast Publishes it

Lol at good posture and bathroom talking. Well done Irish!

Lol at good bathroom talker

Thanks, all.

Thought the board might enjoy this part of the original draft - the editor took it out because editors are mean.

3) The man’s favorite word? “Culture.”

There’s not enough space on the Internet to explain what’s happened to Wake Forest basketball since Wellman hired Jeff [Redacted] as head coach, so I’ll summarize. After a slew of postseason flameouts, Wellman fired Gaudio in 2010. Big names were bandied about as potential new hires. [Redacted], late of Colorado-Boulder and an old pal of Wellman’s, was mentioned. People thought it was a joke. It wasn’t.

Since then, [Redacted]’s gone 51-76, including 2-32 in conference road games, and antagonized a usually milquetoast fan base with a number of strange PR gaffes. Throughout it all, Wellman has stood by his man, consistently citing “culture” as a primary reason for [Redacted]’s retention.

What does “culture” mean in this context? Few players turning pro early, for one, fewer tattoos, for another. “Doing things the right way,” just as grandfathers everywhere intended. Vague and malleable doublespeak, certainly, but excuses for mass losing needs to be.

What does this mean for the rest of you, who don’t know to pronounce [Redacted], don’t care to learn, and are entertained or indifferent to how Wellman oversees his school’s flagship program? It means THOSE schools – you know, the Kentuckys, aspiring Kentuckys and wannabe Kentuckys – may want to wear their church clothes to Selection Sunday. Call it a hunch.

Creighton, on the other hand? That new SI cover (link) oozes with Wellman-culture. Well done, I sense a favorable bracket draw in your near future.

Isn't that just so typical of editors. They often take out the best part.

Perfect article depicting Wellman. Many words, little substance....
