India defeated Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup today ... estimates vary from 500,000 to 1,000,000,000 as to the size of the global audience. That's absolutely mind boggling. The incredible popularity of cricket (and only cricket) in the sub-continent is just insane.

I estimate that the watching audience was somewhere between twenty-seven and four billion and five.

Somewhere in there.

Yeah the first four games of the Cricket WC were well planned. Australia-England had over 95k at the game.

Ireland plays the West Indies at 5 today for anyone interested (don't imagine many are though lol)

Listened to a podcast recently where some Aussie cricket dude was talking about how they'd like to begin targeting minor league baseball players who don't really have a shot at MLB, but could apparently be converted into badass cricket players and make a solid living overseas. It was moderately interesting.

sort of like the NFL checking out successful Rugby players to try and convert them?

Nice an effectively wild listener...

yeah that makes more sense

US Bobsledding has been actively recruiting athletes from other sports for years. Other more obscure sports to US audiences haven't really done it. The US has a surplus of elite athletes, male and female, and not enough professional options for them. It's hard to replace a lifetime of playing a game, but you'd think the USOC and international leagues would at least try. Watch handball for 5 minutes and you'd think the US could spend some money and recruit a team that could at least qualify.

US bobsled is powered by nascar technology as well. they know what's up. Geoff bodine and wind tunnels and what not

Jr threw out the first pitch at a cricket match in India once. He is widely credited with generating popular support for cricket in parts of Asia

More like the reverse.

Exactly. What he said is that you couldn't train a cricket player to play elite baseball, but you could train a really good (though not MLB caliber) baseball player to play elite cricket. And with minor league baseball guys making so little money, it could be a nice career option for them overseas.
