navigating the dry waters of NA beers and liquors (for recs, reviews, whatever)

So some of these-- particularly the faux liquors or their additives-- come with a little something to calm or energize or whatever. Basically, to provide a buzz that isn't an alcohol buzz. I get that caffeine and energy drinks and teas can do much the same, but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of quitting drinking?
Curious about the recent emergence spirits on the market that are hemp or cbd-infused. Not interested in getting a serious buzz(in which case I'd just stick with regular booze), but the idea of either a mild euphoria or sense of mellow sounds nice. Not ready to jump in w/o learning more on the health side or products getting further-developed, but again it does interest me somewhat.

Just drink half of one and see what you think.

I've had a couple CBD beverages (sparkling water and kombucha) that definitely give you a bit of a mellow buzz. One was local (Lenny Boy) and I can't remember the other brand.

I've also tried the HOP WTRs, which taste good, but nootropics/adaptogens don't really seem to do much for me.

i think CBD stuff is pretty safe to try and not worry too much about the effects

THC stuff would be different

personally, I don't really dig the CBD effect, so I've never tried the drinks myself

I've been enjoying some of the options that have adaptogens/nootropics (?) or whatever - Recess and HIYO are the two brands I've had. I can't say there's a buzz or anything, per se, but I do enjoy them and they tend to be lower-calorie than other options. Plus, my sleep scores do seem to be better when I have them as compared to other beverage options.

Haven't tried any CBD items, but I'm not opposed to them.

You're in Oregon. Just grow, buy, sell, and trade actual weed.

Still stuck on the NA beers and think I can go with them as long as I need to, even if forever.

I did pick up some Untitled Art or whatever it's called. I'd say it's pretty top shelf NA beer, but at $16.99 a 6 pack, I won't be buying it again (granted, my local shop here has a pretty good mark-up, but I get the usual stuff for10.99 or 11.99. I'm not paying $17 to not get a buzz).

The Athletic lemon radler is chef's kiss on a hot day.

I don’t know how far outside KS/MO they sell it, but if you can find Wellbeing na beers, everything they do is good. IMG_0206.jpeg

Have you tried Deschutes Black Butte NA? Not available in NC but it is supposed to be excellent, close to the original. The original was always one of my favorites. I am hoping to get a case to two delivered in August.

I’ve been on this train for a while now too. Still drink and enjoy all kinds of regular beer at times but mostly drinking NAs when that’s an option. Chose to do it when I got serious with working out and running for the rest and recovery benefits over traditional beer. Also, I’ve found it comes in handy when you are out on the lake all day then have to tow your boat and family back home for an hour on the road. Guinness is by far the best out there. I usually keep the wild or hazy ipa from Athletic in stock at the house as well. The new Sierra Nevada one (green can) is pretty good. Lots out there I’ve tried have just been bad and very “thin”. I will also second the various hop waters out there as those are good for mixing up your variety but still provide some fun.

Oh my, just told my hubby about this option. Original Black Butte is one of his faves.

one thing I’ve noticed about folks that drink NA beers is that they’re pretty quick to tell you they’re drinking an NA beer

I haven't tried this yet, but porters aren't high on the list of things I'm drinking right now.

We got a couple cans of the Untitled Art and it's by far the best NA IPA we've had... but also way too expensive. Best Day IPA, Lagunitas IPNA, and the Sierra Nevada Trail Pass are also pretty good and not as expensive and we like them more than The Athletic IPA (it tastes too malty).

I like these too.

Odyssey is good too. They have some with caffeine which I like if its not too late in the day.

What's the setting? I mean, I'd think a pretty good segment of NA drinkers are people who still want to retain a bar-like social circle without getting shitfaced, the latter part being a pretty big caveat.

Also, I'll add that the discovery of non-shitty tasting NA beers is a pretty big deal to people who have been drinking for years and whose impression of NA beer is "the O'Doul's shit". I for one am elated to find viable NA beers. And not just viable, but good. I really only jumped on this train to help the Missus quit, but am finding it great that I can drink as much as I want, (theoretically) whenever I want, and not worry about how many I have or the way I feel next day. I am getting the same psychological effect drinking one of these at the end of the day as I get when I grabbed the real deal. I am also beyond the age where I feel I need it to socialize or sing karaoke or something like that.

That's certainly not going to be the case for everybody. I'm fortunate in that I enjoy alcohol more than I'm a slave to it. But there are a lot of folks out there in the same boat as me (and may not realize it), and I hope they try the NA thing not because I'm a teetotaler, but because of the improved quality of life and probable extension of it.
