I saw where Shanahan threw Wilks under the bus after the loss to the Vikings and where Bosa said after the game they weren't well prepared for certain plays. The 2 he pointed out were the long run by Mahomes on the last drive and the 4th and 1. And Shanahan angrily called TO right before that long run by Mahomes, and you could see him yelling into his mic. If your HC and defensive star are willing to publicly call you out, you're probably on thin ice. So while the media is calling this a scapegoat move, it sounds like there were issues within the building. The problem now for SF is all the other DC hires have been made, and you're probably not going to get your preferred candidate.

Eh, he can still get Vrabel or Rivera as his DC, both of whom are probably considered better than Wilks.

Florio also made a couple of good points today. He thinks it was primarily scheme and that they hired a non Seattle cover 3 DC to run the Seattle cover 3, and it just didn't work out. He also said Shanahan likes to just run the O and calls plays and let his DC call all the defensive plays. But with Wilks, he was having to spend more of his time worrying about the D. And that was evidenced by his calling that defensive TO on the final drive as he was presumably screaming at Wilkes on the headset.
