Official 2021 College Football Thread: Grass Picker Named to CFP Selection Committee!

obviously it’s fun to make fun of other fans, but it seems pretty logical for VT to strive to be a top program given where they were. it’s almost identical to the way we talk about our basketball program. it sounds like some insider said clawson was towards the top of some internal list. it would be really weird to me if clawson left wake for VT, but none of us are him so who knows what might attract him to a new school (coaches make ostensibly illogical career choices all the time).

anyway time to clear this thread of that garbage. or we might need another game thread specifically for tracking games that are germane to our hopes.

We are him. Most of us, like him, are smart. VT is the last place on Earth you will find Clawson as a head coach.

And fuck clearing a thread that makes fun of VT.

Guarantee, they will talk plenty next week about Wake, but it will be from the lens of how capable UNC is of taking down (what should be) one of the few unbeatens.

blind resume - opponent record is sans of fcs teams

Team 1 - 7-0, .395 record for opponents faced so far, 34.29 PPG, 18.71 points allowed per game
Team 2 - 8-0, .380 record for opponents faced so far, 41.75 PPG, 24.63 points allowed per game
Team 3 - 7-0, .500 record for opponents faced so far, 43.14 PPG, 26.29 points allowed per game
Team 4 - 6-1, .455 record for opponents faced so far, 45.29 PPG, 19.57 points allowed per game
Team 5 - 7-0, .465 record for opponents faced so far, 41.14 PPG, 14.57 points allowed per game

wonder who the "experts" would rank as the best team? they like to apply metrics to one team but not consider it when they try to promote who they "believe" is the better team

team 1 = Michigan State
team 2 = Oklahoma
team 3 = Wake
team 4 = Pitt
team 5 = Cincinnati

oh and herbie was so quick to point out wake hasn't beaten a team currently ranked last week. well, of those five only cincinnati has a win versus a ranked team.
and ohio state has only played one ranked team - who they lost at home to

There is about as big of a gulf between Clemson and FSU as programs right now as Alabama and somewhere like Miss St. Saying that they are both your peers tells me everything I need to know about how stuck in the past that person’s perspective is.

Clemson is having a mediocre year where they won’t be in the playoffs for the first time since it’s inception. FSU has been bad for the past decade.

Seems that way but FSU won the last BCS championship in 2013 and made the first CFP and in 2014 got destroyed by Oregon for their only loss.

The parallels between the declines of FSU and Clemson are hard to ignore. Both won championships with freshman QBs dominating most opponents on the way. The next year, those QBs returned with all kinds of hype. FSU in 2014 won several close games whereas Clemson in 2019 was still pretty dominant. Both got blown out in the CFP semis for their only loss. Clemson got a third year of Lawrence that was fairly similar to 2019 except with a close regular season loss to ND. But they got blown out in the CFP semis again.

Now we come to FSU in 2015 and Clemson this year. Both transitioning to life without their all time great QB. FSU went 10-3 (5-3) with several close wins. Still good but not dominant and vulnerable for the first time in several years. Clemson right now is 4-3 (3-2).

FSU didn’t make it back. Jimbo saw the writing on the wall and left. There’s talk about Dabo leaving Clemson. We’ll see what happens.

If you want to go back for another decline similar to Clemson, Miami won the 2001 championship, lost the 2002 championship, went 11-2 in 2003, then joined the ACC went 9-3 in 2004 and have only had 10 wins once since.

The FSU decline was largely blamed on losing Jameis and Jimbo planning his exit. The Miami decline was largely blamed on moving from the Big East to the ACC. We will see what happens with Clemson but this could be the end.

This is good stuff. You and others should tweet that out. Definitely make sure Conor and Les see it. Duke 2-5 vs FBS is going drag ours down below .500 although FSU, Louisville, Cuse, and UVa could pick up some wins.
