Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

This team has the pieces in place to make the tournament in two years. We need Manning to come in hard on the recruiting front, and it would be nice to quickly pick up a fifth year guy like Coron who can shoot to fill the gap next year.

The Giles recruitment will be a massive piece of Manning's future here IMO.

He lands Giles, he will be a hero. He doesn't... well... let's hope he does.

So since you're a big insider now, can you detail what went wrong?

I don't have first hand knowledge, of course, but the rumors yesterday that Shaka's wife 86'd the deal seem to be accurate. We were giving Shaka a lot, if not all, of what he wanted to build a big time program here. Maya just never got on board with the whole idea. That's what I've gathered, at least.

Here are a few things:

*Shaka was always #1. He would have been a great hire and he fit well with Wake, but it didn't happen and it wasn't because of money. I don't know about the academic requirement issues, but he is very close to his current and future players and that hurt us.

*DM was not our #2 choice or 3,4,5, etc. I don't know how far down he was, but we did take a run at a lot of guys the board mentioned. We just struck out.

*We overrated our job. In the new landscape of college basketball, it takes more than just $ to make a move.

*I don't know what happened with Howland or Marshall. We were told from day 1 that Marshall would not be involved. Seeing as how Howland hasn't sniffed a job, I can only conclude that ADs did not like what he had to say.

I am going to support DM 100% because at least he has a history of success, even if he has only been a HC for 2 years. I'm excited with what he can do with our bigs (specifically Devin) and hope everyone gives him a shot to succeed.

I agree with everything except this. Yes, it takes more than money, but I don't think we overrated our job. Forget the billboards or rolling the quad or whatever else happened. You have a chance to coach in the ACC and go up against the likes of Krzyzewski, Roy, Boeheim, Petino, etc. That's as enticing as a college basketball job gets. I know there are more factors than that but I don't think we overrated the Wake opening.

He took a team projected to finish last in his conference to a Conference title 2 years later with freshman and sophmores, beat Mike White, made the NCAA tourny, he worked under Self for 7 years, this is a hell of a hire if u ask me, If Manning is our coach we support himm 100%!!!

It's been discussed ad nauseum, but if Ronnie didn't do everything he could to appease Shaka's wife (with the resources available to him), then he's possibly even more incompetent than we thought.

Chris is going to be trolling here all day and it's going to be mighty depressing.

If you have any inkling of an idea like Wake20 said that it's basically Shaka smart or the mike white danny mannings of the world then you have NO LEAKS, nothing. Now some people here will assure us its been quiet and no one's said a word but that's bull shit.

National media outlets espn cbs.Acc website. Dan Collins. Multiple "insiders" on this board saying shaka number one and money no object. Then Wellman delivers Manning ? Again with the stuff about setting up an environment for success.

I'll support Danny Manning cause I love Wake basketball succeeding. I do not enjoy being intentionally fucked with by Wellman and a board trying to viagra a fan base with the prior knowledge there were extenuating factors beyond money they weren't willing to agree to get their top targets.

Fuck you Ron.

Here is how this thread has devolved
1) Make up a set of facts
2) Assert those facts as truth
3) Bitch , moan, and complain about so called truth with zero evidence
4) Repeat number 1 every day

Where is this coming from? I'm not saying it's not true, but I've heard this repeated and haven't found any evidence it is true. I'd feel a lot better about this (potential) hire if someone could convince me this is the case

Manning was considered to be an excellent recruiter during his time at Kansas - how much of that was because he was recruiting for Kansas remains to be seen.

My take from what I've heard in the last 24 hours:

Smart - There is no way we could have thrown more at him. We had pretty much any famous alum we could think of call him. We pandered to his wife. None of it worked. In the end, they didn't want to be here.

We contacted (in no particular order) and got rejected by: Marshall, Miller, Howland, Amaker. I'm honestly not sure how much of that info to believe, because I think Wellman wants to leak an impressive list so we all know he tried.

This search feels like 2010 all over again. We got told no by every big name we approached and eventually had to settle. Ron Wellman has now had 2 major hoops searches in 4 years and has struck out on pretty much every single name he's gone after. At a certain point we need to accept that our program isn't as attractive as we all think, and I believe the prospect of working for Ron Wellman is a major part of it.

The billboard money better be spent welcoming Manning. We all know Wellman shit the bed and needs to go, but it's time to turn the corner after the last 4 years. [Redacted] was an obviously flawed hire from day 1 and never deserved a shot IMO. I feel the opposite about Manning. He deserves a shot. It's not the best hire, but at least this time I don't feel confident we will be a miserable failure the way I did with [Redacted].

This is where I am

If Manning is our coach I will continue to not watch Wake BB games.

I haven't seen a full game in 3 years.

Had Shaka/Marshall/GOOD hire been made, I would have had season tickets and been to the first game of the year.

Until/unless Manning just kicks ass, very little will change in terms of support of the program

There was some article I read that talked about it somewhere. I forgot where. Google works well for that.

1. This is the ACC. The resume should be more robust than this, no?
2. Who fucking cares about his head-to-head record against Mike White?
3. NCAA tourney? OK. I would hope that we would never hire anyone without that on his resume (oh, wait...)
4. Most coaches have worked under a successful head coach.
5. There isn't a single Wake fan who won't support Danny Manning and hope that he'll deliver us from the abyss.

I like that he took a young team to a conference championship. He also has credibility from his playing and coaching days at Kansas.

Regardless, Wellman's time has passed. We need a new AD ASAP for obvious reasons, but also in the event this hire does not work out.

Glad to hear that you'll be willing to jump on the bandwagon if he's successful.

Seems plausible.

I guess we won't see a Bruce Pearl/Auburn reaction when Manning steps off that plane.
