Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

According to this link: https://www.streakingthelawn.com/virginia-cavaliers-basketball/2018/3/29/17177412/virginia-cavaliers-basketball-coach-tony-bennett-salary-contract-bonuses

Bennett made/will make $2.43 million for coaching UVA this season. Also, assuming he is still their coach tomorrow (March 15) he will receive a $1 million longevity bonus. It also appears that he will make at least another $375K in performance bonuses. So, his total comp for this season will be just under $4 million. The deal runs through 2023 and reportedly has a $3 million buyout for Bennett to pay if terminates the contract to coach elsewhere.

There are a ton of ridiculously rich people that live in and around C'ville and support UVA basketball. Have no doubt that if schools start flirting with Bennett, UVA's big time donors will promptly sweeten the pot (they may have already done so).

This is the correct take. UVA has more money than god. And they have sucked in women's hoops (oops, could have hired Dawn Staley but instead hired Boyle) and football for a while now, 2 programs that used to be very strong. They need Bennett and the men's program. If Bennett beamers them by flirting with another school, they will find whatever additional sums of cash that are necessary. If he had no interest in Wisconsin a couple years back, it's hard to think of a school he'd bolt for - maybe Kansas or UNC.

UVA hasn't been "very strong" in football since George Welsh. Have had 4 or more losses every season since '98 and 11 losing seasons.

They had a few good years under Groh before he pissed off all the HS coaches in the state, but yeah, they were strong in the 80s-90s under Welsh. UVA womens hoops under Ryan was a top 5 program back in the 90s, but they struggled in her later years (think she was battling cancer) and have flat out sucked since then. Men's and women's lax have also really fallen off since the Huguely murder and haven't recovered. So they really need their men's hoops and baseball programs. I would have classified UVA as a football school until the 2010s, but that's been changing.

I tend to think AZ might have a little problem attracting the top guys as their post season status may be up for suspension. On their side, they do have two Top 8 recruits and two more Top 50 guys. It will be an interesting gamble to take.

Plus, Bennet is poised to become King of All ACC Coaches with the likely retirement of his chief competitors (K, Roy, Boeheim) over the next few years.

Then who are the top coaches? Don't see Bennett going to UCLA or AZ.

Coaches like Beard or Buzz who have been mentioned for top jobs. Coaches who are already at Wake level jobs or better.

Wake could come in a 5 years $9.5 million, easily. Right now he's at 5 years for $4.25 million. We could more than double their offer.

Wake could double his salary post extension and still be paying him less than Manning. That certainly is not the obstacle, it is Currie convincing him what an opportunity he would have coaching Wake.

Ugh. A coach who is planning to leave doesn’t sign this today (it would still be there for him in a few weeks) only to have to pay a higher buyout in a couple weeks. Think that does it for him unless one of the blue bloods comes calling with multiple millions at year end.

Having lived in both upstate NY and Winston-Salem I can tell you that he would also make a net gain on cost of living by moving to Winston-Salem. Higher property taxes, higher income tax, higher prices for gas, etc. where he is now.

Buffalo is making a move to increase the buyout that they will receive when a wealthier program poaches Oats. In the unlikely event that Oats decides to wait another year, he just negotiated a nice salary bump. Win-win.

Let me get this straight. Mussellman (who went to the Sweet 16 last year) and Matta (championship game and final four appearance) aren't top candidates while Buzz (who hasn't won an NCAA game at VaTech in 4 years is a top candidate.

We don’t know what the buyout is and doesn’t the hiring school usually pay it out? Could be trying to do UB a solid by upping the buyout figure some of he knows he’s gone after this season. Gives him more bargaining power on his base too.
