Redskins Name Change Thread

seems like changing a team name is a goldmine for merchandising and other moneymaking avenues

Dan Snyder is a little strange stubborn lonely dude.

He was a loser at life and then hit it big with a direct mail business (which was really right place/right time, but credit to him for taking advantage). He then fell into the Redskins when Jack Kent Cooke died, and the winning ownership group had to pull out. Doubt there is an owner of any major sports franchise that has worse social skills than Dan Snyder. He hides from the media; the few times when he does make public comments, he is incredibly uneasy and unsure of himself for someone in his position; it's just painful to watch. From every report, Snyder essentially has no friends, which is why Bruce Allen lasted so long in DC despite his awful record as team president and general manager; essentially Snyder was completely reliant on Allen because he had no ability to communicate with others to find replacements. This also explains why the Redskins have been so dreadful under Snyder.

Snyder has long taken the position that he will never change the team name (Snyder grew up in the DC area and has been a life-long Redskins fans), but the world is closing in on him on this issue. Just not sure if there is anyone available to counsel him and help him find a way to change the name, but keep much of the team tradition. The team name is going to change; Snyder may as well take the lead use it to turn a negative situation into a positive one, and then market the hell out of the new franchise name. The next step is going to be Goodell putting pressure on Snyder.

Snyder could make money on both sides of the name change. Team merchandise isn't moving well at the moment. The close-out sale of "never to be available again" merchandise could move a lot of stuff.

Then have a big contest for the new name. Lots of publicity and marketing opportunities

Then of course, all the opportunities to market tons of stuff with the new team name, new look.

Win - win - win. making $$$$$$$$$ all the way.

He sees it coming, with the removal of the George P. Marshall statue and renaming the lower bowl of the stadium.
With the new management group in place, he might see the opportunities in changing.

The only thing I would disagree with at all is more of a tactical one not substantive. I think they should even play up close-out. By using "never to be available again" might have a connotation that this is good stuff and turn some customers off. By letting it go, you could have it both ways.

You are right that he'd be crying all the way to the bank when he changes the name of the team.

Just drop "Red" and go with the "Skins". Change the mascot to Buffalo Bill.

Wait a second! We all missed Skinny's ulterior motives. He either wants free season tickets or is willing to be the mascot.

Owner Abe Pollard changed the name of the team. He was one of the last of the really old guard. In the 90s, Chris Webber went public with being pissed about not be asked whom the team should draft. Pollard told the press if Webber wanted to make ownership decisions he should buy into the team.

Nike removed all Redskins-related apparel from its website.

“What’s the point of being fuck you rich if you never say fuck you? -Bobby Axelrod” -Dan Snyder

For better or worse, the dude is dug in. I’m still 100% that he won’t relent, but will certainly be interesting to see what plays out.

When at least one of the guys in your ownership group is saying time to change, maybe it's time.

Maybe if the uniform manufacturers refused to make uniforms with the name and logo, he'd get another strong message.

Or if Goodell refused to sell their products in the NFL website.

I still chuckle about the Skins fan who used to dress up like a Native American in full headdress and spear. He went to an Eagles game and got a ticket for the 700 Level. He was shocked that he left the game in his underwear. Poor baby. Even vendors knew not got to the 700 Level after the third quarter.

There's that old saying, "They're not making any more land."

Well they're not making any more NFL mascots. So if you can create a new one, your franchise is going to make a shit ton of money. Keep the same color scheme. Just get a new mascot.

I'm sure we've pointed this out before, but Washington used to have the Senators and the Bullets. Now they have the Nationals and the Wizards.

And if DC Statehood passes, they may not even be Washington anymore. Maybe they'll be the Douglass Defenders.

What about the "Washington Bureaucrats"?

They are already one of the most inefficient franchises in the league. They could just print tickets out of thin air, then charge a tax at the ticket booth. The price you pay would be super confusing unless you hired an accountant and it would change every year. Once the ticket prices reached a point that it was burdensome, some fans would start to complain. Other fans would tell them that they should shut up and quit being such bigoted baby hating fans.
