Bzz is second coming of Roberts. Only Hooks had the sense to admit his mistake in not giving Jesse a raise ( running him to O R U ) and brought him back before Roberts ruined the golf program. Everyone knew right away that Bzzz was a huge mistake but Wellman has refused to admit his error- and has almost destroyed the basketball program as a result. Let us hope that he will belatedly fire Bzz now.

Dr Hooks had no choice in the matter actually. Dr Scales had him backed into a corner by telling him there was no money for anything but football & basketball. So when Jesse gave the ultimatum for a raise, Dr Hooks couldn't give it on orders from the President of the university. It severely hurt the golf program for a couple of years but we got it back and won the NC in 1986 with Coach Haddock. Now everybody is offering golf and with only 4.5 schollies the competition is fierce and equal.

What we were doing in golf back then with unlimited funds, like Houston & Ok St & Texas was very similar to what Wooden used to do at UCLA. The very few in golf back then got all the talent because not many played golf seriously and we made our niche in it and did it well!!

I didn't know Hooks didn't have the funds to reward Jesse for the NCAA championships in 1974 and 1975. My bad. I just know that he got rid of Roberts quickly and Jesse came home. Yes, WFU had more scholarships than most schools back then but Jesse( with the help of Arnold) built a national power at WFU. The limitation of 4.5 scholarships hurts WFU because few golfers want to accept less than a full ride at an expensive school such as WFU. Schools such as Coastal Carolina can sign 10 or so good players with the limited scholarships and offer the beach, girls and an easy curriculum . No wonder WFU can't dominate in golf anymore, but we should be a top 15 golf school every year nonetheless .

Agree. Tacy is and was under appreciated . He beat Dean Smith more than any other coach . Other than Fran Mcafferry, he recruited excellent shooters. Will never forget the upset in the 1972 ACCT and the near upset in 1973, when WFU was victim to the "scoreboard" call.

Carl Tacy wasn't the coach during the 1972 ACCT. I was at the scoreboard game. That was in 1975.
