'TREE - "I can cook a little bit..."

How many minutes? Seemed like he had a lot more tonight or he made the most of them.

I'd like to see him play 24-28 mpg. We are better offensively and defensively with him on the court. We absolutely score easier with him handling the ball.

My old coach had a saying, "Passing is contagious". It is and it leads to much better shots and higher efficiency.

Year Games MPG PPG APG RPG SPG BPG TPG FG% FT% 3P%
1980 - 1981 27 14.5 3.7 0.6 3.5 0.4 0.6 0.6 50.0 48.0 0.0

Career 121 28.2 8.6 1.8 7.2 0.9 1.7 1.3 51.3 73.4 33.3

I'd take those numbers from him.

They couldn't be more different players. Teachey is one of favorite Deacs of all time, but he is a classic PF/C. He didn't handle the ball. He played against bigs and was very, very good at it. Tree is guard/SF.

You can't just give him minutes without stealing them from someone else. To double his minutes you'd have to bench Chase completely or drastically cut Moto or Cav's time. Considering Cav is filling in for Devin when he's out that's not really possible. So really he'd have to take them from Moto who started everything off last night by showing why he's a starter right now.

I don't see more than 15 minutes for either Tree or Chase until they improve their weak spots.

I've said he should flip minutes with Moto, who should not be starting or ending games at this point. Moto has many more weaknesses than Tree does at this point.

Eh, but we use Moto to defend the post. Tree would really struggle in that role I think. That'd put McKie back defending the 4 which was killing us. I don't know. I hope we get some space in some games where we see what Tree can do against ACC teams. It's pretty obvious that the 3's he hit earlier in the season are viewed as outliers by the coaching staff.

Tree's been getting 10-15 minutes and Moto's getting 15-20. Not a huge difference in minutes although Duke was an outlier.

I would disagree that Moto has "many" more weaknesses. They're both 50% from the line and we don't want either of them shooting 3's. Tree's a much better passer and smarter player, Moto is much stronger and can defend anywhere on the court while Tree is more of a specialist pressuring the ball and jumping passing lanes/chasing from behind.

I see both arguments, but I do think Moto is more helpful to the team at the moment considering our size issues.

Tree can cover 1,2,3 and understands how to help in the post from off the ball. Moto tries really hard and will hopefully learn a lot, but he doesn't understand rotations at all.

As to shooting threes, Moto takes the open ones, which actually he should. You have to take open shots if you play his position. But Tree can create off that shot.

P.S. the reason I say Tree can cover most PGs is he understands how to force a PG into driving and then closes from behind. Obviously he's not quick enough to cover an elite PG.

His rotations on D are really important. Plus it's very clear he's a leader on the court. At this point he's really our only leader on the court. CJ and Travis are good scorers, but they a role players.

The comparison of 'Tree and Teachey is interesting. 'Tree is better looking and smiles more. They both have a funny quirk in their release and their shot does not look like it should go in. They don't seem to be disturbed by anything. Both are great guys to have on the team, and I hope 'Tree will help us as much as Teachey did.

There really are arguments all around for how the minutes should be divided. If I could ask Bz a question, in all seriousness, it would probably be what exactly his strategy is with minutes for the Freshmen. It seemed to be a jumbled mess at first, just trying to figure out what sticks. Now he seems to have settled on a starting lineup but there are still questionable substitution patterns. I'm not saying I completely disagree with all the decisions. I liked seeing the adjustment to using both Cav and Devin on the floor at the same time when we need help down low. It will cause foul trouble issues, but sometimes you have to take that risk with this roster. At other times, I really dont understand his use of certain players in certain situations, particularly Fischer when it seems like we need defensive stops. I am starting to really like both Moto and Tree for different reasons, I'd like to see more of both of them to be honest but I know that is practically impossible.

I would like to see a couple minutes a game with CJ, Madison, Moto, Tree and Devin on the court together and go balls to the walls on pressuring every pass.

We can't do it for a long period but for one timeout segment it could disrupt the opposition.

I'd almost consider putting Codi in for CJ, but I'm not sure we're ready for five frosh at a time. If Codi becomes more assertive looking to score, I would hesitate less.

We played a little Madison and Codi together last night. That was interesting. Maybe a sign of things to come...

Nothing about Codi has looked particularly point-guard like so far, although I like his game and love his potential. He could certainly be CJ 2.0 if we push him that way.

Teachey was also one of my favorite players but I agree with RJ that the comparison is not with 'Tree. I remarked last year that Daniel Green reminded me of Teachey in his freshman year. Size, role on the team, shot form and even some of his mannerisms are reminiscent of Anthony.

The more Tree plays, the less we need PG. He creates easy shots for everyone.

I thought Codi stepped up his on ball defense last night. Thats good to see. Still waiting for him to break a sweat though.

I'd be thrilled if that's how he turns out. Let's hope you're right.

Here's my annual call for DG updates: does anybody have some?

I really think Travis plays a lot better when he is on the floor with Aaron. (similar to what was being said about Codi & Devin.) I don't know what it is, but I feel like Travis generally starts so slow and it isn't until Aaron's on the court with him that he catches fire. That may mean that Bz should always play Aaron with Travis at around the 12-15 minute mark, if Travis hasn't gotten it in gear yet.

I feel like we have to have at least 3 scorers on the floor always. But I don't think it is out of the question to start Aaron in the backcourt with CJ and then put either Moto or CMM on the court after the first TO. I agree that Rountree's enthusiasm and energy help the offense and defense to run smoother, even if he is not the one scoring.

Daniel Green....that's a name I forgot, due to injury. Where will he fit in to the rotation next season? Will he start? Just completely forgot about him and now I wonder where he fits in, in the coming years.
