Unions

Of course the right and business leaders hate unions, their plan to kill unions has succeeded in harming the middle class. As the link below shows, as unions declined so has the percentage of income for the middle class.

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/03/03/147994/unions-income-inequality/

If you kill unions, the rich get richer. The middle and poor get poorer. It's just that simple.

"Which was very relevant in 1920. Not so much today."

How do you figure? Special interest money is as big an issue as it's ever been.

There is a wealth of worker protection, equality, and anti trust legislation that has been promulgated since then. Its entrenched and is not going anywhere.

I agree that as long as we have the current system, there needs to be a funded voice for the workers in congress, but American workers enjoy more than adequate protection under the current umbrella of legislation.

the thing that is missed in these discussions is that it doesn't have to be all unions or no unions.

Part of the error necessary to protect good teachers and workers is protecting a few of the crappy ones.

Nonsense. I see time and time again where the union (my union) steps in to protect shitty employees. And not just shitty ones, but the kind that would be fired at the drop of a hat if they could. The kind that DESERVE to be fired because they don't work (I'm not talking about an arbitrary measure of working here, but something quite tangible), because they're surfing porn, because they're jerking off out in the parking lot on their lunch break, or because they stole computer equipment from the workplace. It is absurd. And beyond that, the union also opts to pursue completely baseless grievances when they could opt not to. Not protecting those kinds of employees would give the union a better relationship with management.

They won and ran out of actual workplace injustices to fight, for the most part. Or places with workplace injustice moved overseas.

Agree with this. It is no longer a matter of fundamental fairness or acting as a buffer between workers and overzealous, dickheaded management, but more a matter of negotiating sweetheart deals, not budging on existing ones, and being a fundraising arm for the local Dem pol. I think the arbitrators that have to settle management-union disagreements better represent the interests of workers than unions do. We aren't going to go back to the days of child labor or slavery if the influence of unions is lessened, nor will we somehow dismantle OSHA.

I love that ELC is a government worker in a union. He's a bigger sell-out than I am.

Does the union protect posting on Tunnels ELC?

So in an ideal world for some of you, all states would be at-will states and all workers would be independent and have no organized voice (which we now know thanks to the SCOTUS means $$) to influence legislation.

Has anyone said that they want to get rid of unions altogether?

No. But they've said they want to take away any potential power they'd have.

TR, how do you think unions should work. Please keep it reasonable length.

Get rid of closed shop laws. That will take care of pretty much everything right there.

So if employees vote to make it a union shop, it shouldn't be a union shop?

If by sell-out you mean he has to join a union in order to be a civil servant. Precisely what he is saying is wrong with public employee unions. Its extortion.

Because the union members will be screwed by the owner of the business. He will just hire those who promise not to join the union.

Which would be illegal.
