From someone 15 hours away who reads and watches everything possible but can't actually get over to see a practice I hope someone can answer this or let me know if already discussed. What is going on with Kearns? He was the highest rated QB in program history and doesn't even get a look in this QB battle?
Rightly or wrongly I think the decision was made early on that the staff wasn’t going to turn the keys over to Kearns this season because he lacked experience running the offense in practice and games. Then Hinton and Wolford needed a big percentage of the reps to essentially prepare two starters. So Kearns has been left with whatever reps the third team was able to get. But he certainly hasn’t disappointed in the scrimmages. In the last summer’s second scrimmage he led a beautiful TD drive in his final series. In the spring he did the same thing with his last series (maybe not as picturesque, but just as effective). Then in his first series this summer he had the most impressive drive from any QB in the first scrimmage. I’m an unabashed Kearns fan, but I also know that he won’t move up the depth chart until the staff is willing (or able?) to invest more 1st team/2nd team practice reps in him.
The arm looks very legit. He has his share of bad looking throws, but who knows if the 3rd string WRs are even running the right routes. The whole third string O looks just as messy as you would imagine.
